The Rockefeller Foundation AI Readiness Project, launched in partnership with the Center for Civic Futures, builds state government capacity for responsible AI adoption across the United States. The initiative funds state-level pilots that help state agencies understand, evaluate, and responsibly deploy artificial intelligence in public services. The project began with 30 states in its initial phase and is expanding to cover all 50 states plus territories and Tribal Nations by 2026. Each state pilot includes AI readiness assessments for government agencies, training programs for state employees on responsible AI use, development of AI governance frameworks at the state level, and building a public knowledge hub of best practices and shared resources. This is one of the few major philanthropic investments specifically targeting state-level AI governance and capacity, recognizing that state governments are critical but often under-resourced actors in AI policy implementation. The initiative complements federal AI governance efforts by ensuring states have the tools and knowledge to implement responsible AI practices in public services.
