, since 1971 to ensure Free Spirit Scholars have the most comprehensive, experienced care, while participating in the conference. To apply for the Al Neuharth Free Spirit and Journalism Conference, complete the online application form and upload the required materials. ALL application materials must be uploaded in the online application.
You can apply to be the Free Spirit Scholar representing your state if you are: A current high school junior (rising senior by the time of the conference) who will graduate in 2027 Interested in journalism or multimedia storytelling (including documentaries, photo essays, podcasts or other digital media) and free expression A free spirit, which can mean someone who is a risk-taker, a visionary, an innovative leader, an entrepreneur or a courageous achiever who accomplishes great things beyond his or her normal circumstances Available to attend the entire conference in person June 21-26, 2026 Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.
Applicants must reside in one of the 50 states or Washington, D. C. Upload your supplemental materials Upload your unofficial transcript, essays, letters of recommendation, journalism or multimedia storytelling samples and a color headshot directly to your online application.
Submit letter(s) of recommendation Upload your letter(s) of recommendation directly to your online application and include the contact information of the person providing it. Two letters of recommendation are strongly preferred, but only one is required. Letters should describe your qualities, interest in journalism or multimedia storytelling and characteristics that make you a free spirit.
Letter writers should be familiar with your work and personal characteristics. If possible, letters of recommendation should be submitted on official letterhead. If your school recommendation policy does not allow for letters to be shared directly with students, please have the letter writer upload the document here .
Submit three journalistic or multimedia storytelling work samples Upload with your online application or include publicly viewable links (URL) to three published or unpublished work samples such as: Bylined print or online article Classroom journalism or multimedia storytelling assignments Audio or video samples posted online to YouTube, TikTok, your own website or other platforms Upload each 500-word essay into your online application.
Describe your interest in and passion for journalism or multimedia storytelling. What characteristics make you a “free spirit”? Describe the qualities, experiences and/or challenges that make you a free spirit.
Possible characteristics include leadership, courage, creativity, risk-taking, innovative thinking, perseverance, or rising above circumstances to accomplish something extraordinary. All supplemental application materials (transcripts, essays, samples, etc.) must be uploaded directly to your online application, preferably as PDFs. Word documents are also permissible.
Do not send Google Docs links. All applicants will be notified by mid-May 2026 if they have been selected for the program. Freedom Forum makes all determinations without regard to race, color, gender, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability or any other protected classification.
