APA AI2050 Prizes is an award from Schmidt Sciences, administered through the American Philosophical Association, that funds published research addressing the "Hard Problems" of Artificial Intelligence — including AI safety, ethics, alignment, and technical scalability. The program awards two prizes per cycle: one for an early-career researcher and one for an established researcher, each receiving $10,000.
Eligible applicants include graduate students, faculty, and researchers working at the intersection of philosophy and technical AI disciplines. The 2026 application deadline is June 23, 2026. Submissions should represent original published or forthcoming work that substantively advances understanding of fundamental challenges in AI.

**Frequency:**Two prizes awarded annually **Award Amount:** $10,000 per prize **Next Deadline:**June 23, 2026 Two prizes will be awarded each year, one for an established researcher and one for an early career researcher. Each prize winner will receive $10,000. If there are co-winners, they will split the prize amount equally.
The prizes will be awarded at the APA divisional meetings. The following eligibility criteria applies to both prizes: * Published work that engages with theAI2050 Hard Problemsis eligible to be considered for the APA AI2050 Prizes.
Work beyond the discipline of philosophy is eligible and welcome, though nominations are more likely to be successful if they engage at least in part with the philosophical issues related to the Hard Problems as articulated by Schmidt Sciences. Hard Problems 2, 3, 5, 8, 9, and 10 are especially likely to raise issues for philosophical engagement, but work on any of the Hard Problems is welcome.
* Journal articles and book chapters engaging with one or more of the AI2050 Hard Problems are eligible to be nominated. **Nominated works must have been published within the last 5 years. ** (For the 2025 award, this means any work published in 2020 or a later year may be considered.)
**An author may be nominated up to two times for up to two different works per prize cycle. ** * To be eligible to win an AI2050 prize, **all authors of a nominated work must meet the eligibility criteria. ** If a prize is awarded to a paper or chapter with multiple authors, they will split the prize and travel funding equally among them.
If coauthors of a nominated work meet the eligibility criteria for different prizes (e.g., one coauthor received their PhD less than 10 years ago and another coauthor received their PhD more than 10 years ago), the work will be considered for the Established Researcher prize. * Researchers anywhere in the world and working in any discipline are eligible to be considered for the APA AI2050 Prizes.
In order to receive the monetary prize, the APA must be able to provide the funds to the winner without violating any laws, regulations, or sanctions. * Nominees must be APA members. Discounted membership is available for those working outside philosophy and those in UN LDC countries.
And a membership assistance fund has been created to assist those for whom APA membership would be a financial hardship. Those interested in membership assistance should so indicate on the nomination form.
Eligibility for the AI2050 Prize for Early Career Researchers To be eligible for the AI2050 Prize for early career researchers, the nominee must be (a) 40 years of age or younger in the year of the volume in which the nominated work was published, (b) received their PhD 10 or fewer years before the year in which the nominated work was published, _or_ (c) a currently enrolled graduate student in the year of the volume in which the nominated work was published.
Eligibility for the AI2050 Prize for Established Researchers To be eligible for the AI2050 Prize for established researchers, the nominee must be (a) older than 40 years of age in the year of the volume in which the nominated work was published, _or_ (b) received their PhD more than 10 years before the year in which the nominated work was published. Any APA member may be nominated for the prize; **self-nominations are welcome**.
If membership dues are a financial barrier for nominees, they may indicate their interest in financial assistance from the APA membership fund on the nomination form or by contactingprizes@apaonline. org. Nominations are reviewed by a selection committee appointed by the APA Committee on Lectures, Publications, and Research.
Members of the selection committee will be invited to add to the pool of nominated works. Nominated works are evaluated on (a) their engagement with and innovation around the AI2050 Hard Problems, (b) philosophical merit, and (c) potential for future impact, among other factors determined by the selection committee during its deliberations.
While self-nominations are permitted and encouraged, **a statement of support by an APA member other than the author(s) is required for all nominations. ** This statement of support must be no more than 500 words in length. **To submit a nomination for the prize, please use the AI2050 Nomination Form.
