** General Operating Application ## 2026 CityArts Program Overview The City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) supports artists and cultural organizations, invests in the creative economy, and expands access and participation in the arts throughout Chicago’s 77 neighborhoods.
The CityArts Program aims to support a diverse group of arts and culture nonprofits reflective of the city of Chicago and its cultural landscape through flexible and strategic grant funding. Chicago arts and culture nonprofits of all sizes and artistic disciplines can apply for CityArts grants.
**In 2026, the CityArts Program will offer two types of grants:** * General Operating Grants for Arts & Culture Organizations * Project Grants for Arts & Culture Organizations There will be separate applications and review processes for each type. Eligible organizations may apply for both a general operating grant AND a project grant in 2026.
Some past grantees that cannot apply for general operating support in 2026 may be eligible to apply for project funding if otherwise eligible. Refer to Eligibility Criteria below and in CityArts guidelines for more details. **The application deadline for the 2026 CityArts program is June 3, 2026 at noon CT.
** Be sure to review Contract Requirements including insurance coverage and documentation required by the City of Chicago for all grantees. The 2026 CityArts Project Opportunity is new this year. Review below and the 2026 CityArts Guidelines for detailed information.

org** for assistance. General Operating: Flexible support for Chicago-based arts and culture nonprofits of all sizes. General operating support funds may be used for artistic, administrative and/or program activities including expenses such as salaries, marketing, insurance, supplies, professional services, fees and training.
Project Grants: Strategic investments to promote the health and vitality of Chicago’s creative sector. Grants can support new or existing programs promoting innovation or sustainability of Chicago’s arts and cultural landscape. Projects should be distinct from activities to be supported by CityArts general operating funds.
Projects can range from support for an applicant’s own organizational development and capacity building, to sustaining existing impactful programming amid a changing landscape. To be eligible for a CityArts grant in 2026, all applicants must meet the following criteria: * Have a primary mission to create, produce, present, provide, or support arts and culture activities or services for the public.
* Offer programs in an artistic discipline, operate as a museum, or serve as an arts service organization. * Be a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. * Be incorporated in the state of Illinois for at least 12 months prior to applying (must have been incorporated as of April 2025).
* Be a resident company in the city of Chicago with a valid street address (P. O. Boxes will not be accepted).
* Be able to complete a grant agreement with the City of Chicago. * Primarily serve the residents of the city of Chicago (demonstrate that, on average, half of all programming occurs within the city of Chicago limits). * Be up to date on DCASE Cultural Grants reports.
Past grantees that have not completed required reports for the most recently awarded grant cycle are not eligible. General Operating applicants must also meet the following criteria: * Not be receiving other significant support (cash or In Kind) from the City of Chicago or a City of Chicago Delegate Agency. Significant support is defined as more than $2M within the calendar year towards an organization’s annual budget.
* Not have already received a CityArts general operating award in 2025, that is up for renewal in 2026. * Not have received a CityArts general operating award in 2024 and consecutive renewal grant in 2025. Project applicants may include: * Organizations that are eligible to apply for 2026 CityArts general operating support.
* Past CityArts grantees that are not eligible to apply for general operating support in 2026 but are otherwise eligible.
This includes: * **Organizations awarded 2025 CityArts general operating grants,** who cannot apply for 2026 CityArts general operating due to already being eligible for a renewal grant * **Organizations awarded 2024 CityArts general operating grants,** who are required to take one year off after receiving consecutive general operating funds in 2024 and 2025 The following are not eligible for CityArts Project Funding: * Recipients of DCASE project funding whose projects are still active with the City, such as current Neighborhood Access Program grantees or other grant recipients with project extensions.
## CityArts Grant Payment Guidance 2026 CityArts general operating grants are renewable for one year. Recipients will receive an initial payment upon completion of their contract to support general operating activities in 2026.
2026 general operating grantees are eligible to receive a renewal grant in 2027 at the same amount supporting 2027 general operating activities without needing to re-apply, pending completion of their 2026 final report. 2025 CityArts general operating grantees do not need to re-apply for general operating support in 2026 since they are already eligible for renewal.
CityArts grantees can receive general operating funding for up to two consecutive years before it is required to take one year off from applying for or receiving CityArts general operating support. Recipients of CityArts 2024-25 general operating funding are not eligible to apply for general operating support in 2026.
2026 CityArts Project grants will be one-time payments upon completion of their contract and grantees will have through December 31, 2027 to complete their project. ## CityArts Grant Amounts General Operating applicants do not need to request a grant amount as it will be determined as outlined below, based on the organization’s average Annual Revenue over the past three years.
* Average Annual Revenue of $10,000: Grant amount will be approximately equal to the organization’s average annual revenue. * Average Annual Revenue of $10,000 - $100,000: Grant amount will be up to $10,000. * Average Annual Revenue of $100,000 - $500,000: Grant amount will be up to 10% of the organization’s average annual revenue and no more than $25,000.
* Average Annual Revenue of $500,000+: Grant amount will be up to 5% of the organization’s average annual revenue and no more than $50,000. Project applicants can request between $10,000 and $50,000, up to 25% of your organization’s three-year average annual revenue as calculated above. If your average annual revenue is less than $40,000, apply for a $10,000 grant.
