Grants & Scholarships | The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia Responding to Local Needs Supporting Innovation, Inclusion, and Opportunity Across Northern Virginia The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia strives to build a community that works for everyone.
We use a data-driven approach to understand the greatest needs of the region and manage competitive and transparent grants and scholarship processes that bolster our community.
In FY2024, we awarded more than $10 million in total grants and scholarships, including $960,375 in grants from discretionary funds , $631,190 in scholarships, and $8,815,297 from donor advised funds that the Community Foundation managed in order to help make more possible for Northern Virginia.
In FY2025, we awarded $521,598 in scholarships, $983,735 in discretionary grants, and $7,918,432 in grants from donor advised funds, totaling $9,423,765 back to the communities we know and love. The Community Foundation runs community grant cycles that support schools and nonprofits in Northern Virginia in a variety of areas guided by research. These include child and youth development, safety net support, mental health, aging, military personnel, disabilities, education, the arts, the environment, Latino engagement and achievement and innovation.
Scholarship Opportunities The Community Foundation for Northern Virginia manages 35 scholarship funds that support Northern Virginia students pursuing undergraduate degrees. Annually, the Community Foundation awards more than $500,000 to 150+ high school graduates and current college students.
Nonprofit organizations can use the Community Foundation’s Grant Application Portal to apply, update or submit grant applications and final reports for past grants from the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia. 703 879 7640 grants@cfnova. org Expanding STEM Opportunity in Northern Virginia Building Northern Virginia’s Future—Together For students across Northern Virginia, opportunity often begins with exposure: the first time they code an app, build a robot, or see how artificial intelligence connects to real-world careers.
In 2026, hundreds of middle and high school students will gain those experiences through hands-on STEM programs made possible by a strategic partnership between the Community Foundation for Northern Virginia (CFNOVA) and the Micron Foundation .
Through the Micron STEM Opportunity Fund , CFNOVA and Micron are investing $190,000 in eight nonprofit and educational organizations delivering high-quality, career-connected STEM learning to students in grades 6–12.
These programs emphasize engineering and physical sciences, responsible technology and AI learning, and strong measurement practices—ensuring students are not only learning new skills, but building confidence, relevance, and momentum toward future careers. . The Homeless Youth Program is a grant from the Illinois Department of Human Services that funds services for homeless and at-risk youth across Illinois.
