Application process RESOURCES LANGUAGES Strengthening public health data systems Launched in 2019 to expand the reach of the Data for Health Initiative , Vital Strategies’ Global Grants Program (GGP) provides financial and technical support to low- and middle-income countries to improve systems that collect, analyze, and use data for public-health decision making.
Through a competitive selection process, country partners identify and implement targeted projects that address pressing public health priorities. As experts deeply familiar with their local health systems and communities, these partners drive GGP-funded initiatives, ensuring solutions are tailored to their unique contexts.
The GGP builds on insights from previous data intelligence efforts, fosters regional collaboration, and facilitates the exchange of best practices and technical expertise among countries tackling similar challenges.
To date, the GGP has committed $13 million to 155 projects across 61 countries in Asia, Africa, Central and Eastern Europe, and Latin America, funding initiatives in Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) , Data Impact , and Cancer Registries . These efforts have strengthened public health systems and advanced evidence-based policymaking worldwide.
Data for Health Initiative The Data for Health Initiative (D4H), funded by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation , partners with low- and middle-income countries to strengthen CRVS systems and promote the use of public health data for policymaking.
As an implementing partner, Vital Strategies leads several programs dedicated to data improvement and public health intelligence: The CRVS Program aids governments in strengthening their systems for counting every birth and death and for monitoring the causes of death. The Data Impact Program supports governments to maximize the use of data to enhance public health policymaking and decision-making.
The Cancer Registries Program assists governments in establishing and strengthening population-based cancer registries. The Global Grants Program provides technical assistance and funds to government and local experts to implement discrete projects focused on work in the above areas.
As part of its broader advocacy efforts, D4H is promoting The Lifesaving Potential of Death Data campaign to urge governments and other decisionmakers to prioritize stronger death registration systems and invest in the collection and analysis of cause-of-death data.
