The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile | Mobile for Development The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile The GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile Three billion people – 38% of the world’s population – live in areas covered by mobile internet but do not use it due to barriers such as limited digital literacy and skills, lack of relevant content, online safety concerns, and insufficient access.
Persistent gaps in access to reliable electricity across many markets limit individuals and communities from charging devices, which in turn restricts their ability to access online services and participate in other energy‑dependent economic activities. Additionally, handset affordability is often recognised as the most significant barrier preventing people from getting online.
In this context, the GSMA Innovation Fund for Green Transition for Mobile will provide grants and technical assistance to small and growing enterprises that leverage mobile and digital technologies (including AI) to improve digital inclusion and climate action in at least one of the following key focus areas which include: Digital solutions that improve access to clean, reliable energy, particularly in underserved areas.
By strengthening energy systems, we expand participation in the digital economy and advance digital inclusion. These could include, but are not limited to, productive-use energy solutions, smart metering, energy efficiency solutions, small-scale mini-grid or mesh-grid models, and other renewable energy solutions. Solutions that advance device circularity, reduce value-chain emissions, and improve handset affordability.
