Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery Initiative Grant to Association of Historically Black Colleges and Universities Research Institutions (AHRI) is sponsored by Harvard University (through the Harvard & the Legacy of Slavery Initiative). ACLS HBCU Faculty Fellowships and Grants is sponsored by American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS). HBCU Cultural Heritage Stewardship Initiative is sponsored by National Trust for Historic Preservation, African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund (in partnership with National Endowment for the Humanities). This program provides technical assistance and funds new Cultural Heritage Stewardship Plans at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to empower them with resources to protect, preserve, and leverage their historic campuses, buildings, and landscapes.

The HBCU Cultural Heritage Stewardship Initiative is a grant program from the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, that funds Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) to preserve and steward their historic campuses and buildings. Supported by a coalition of funders including the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation, JPB Foundation, and J.M. Kaplan Fund, the initiative has invested over $2 million to create Cultural Heritage Stewardship Plans and provide technical assistance. Eligible applicants are HBCUs with historic campuses and buildings requiring preservation planning. Past recipients received funding in 2023, and new cycles have been announced through the African American Cultural Heritage Action Fund.

Preservation of Historic Structures on the Campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). is sponsored by Department of the Interior. In 1988, the National Park Service established the Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Preservation grant program to document, preserve, and stabilize structures on HBCU campuses. The HBCU grant program exists to repair historic structures on campuses of Historically Black Colleges and Universities that are listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places either individually or as contributing to a National Register historic district. Projects must meet major program selection criteria and all work must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation.
