Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program - Mississippi Department of Human Services Division of Community Services Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program Get help with power bills, gas bills, and other home energy costs. Check Eligibility for LIHEAP The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps keep families safe and healthy by assisting with energy costs. Who Qualifies for LIHEAP?
Someone who typically qualifies for LIHEAP: Has a household income at or below the 60% of the state median income for their household size Has an energy bill due to an energy company or landlord Is a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident of the U.S. To receive assistance through LIHEAP, your family must meet eligibility requirements. Funding is limited.
LIHEAP provides financial assistance to eligible households to help with: Households may qualify for regular LIHEAP assistance and/or the emergency Energy Crisis Intervention Program (ECIP) for natural gas, wood, electricity, liquid propane/butane gas and other energy-related services. LIHEAP is offered in each of the 82 counties in Mississippi, pending the availability of funds.
Vulnerable households receive the greatest priority among families who qualify for services. Vulnerable households include those households with members who are elderly, disabled, or with children age 5 or younger. Apply for energy Assistance To apply for LIHEAP, you will need to submit a pre-application through the Common Web Portal on Access MS .
This information will be provided to the Community Action Agency (CAA) in your area. CAA staff will contact you to schedule an appointment, and you’ll complete your full application in person. Submit your application for LIHEAP online To apply for energy bill assistance through LIHEAP, mark “Community Services” on the list of programs for which you’re applying.
Receive a notice (letter) with an appointment date and time After you submit your application, you should receive a notice (letter) in the mail or by email with an appointment date and time at your local Community Action Agency (CAA). If you need to reschedule the appointment, call your CAA to request another appointment.
You should expect your appointment date to be within 30 business days of the day you submitted your application if you are elderly, disabled, or part of a family with a child age five (5) or under. All other clients should expect their appointment date to be within 45 days. Your appointment notice will also provide you with information about the information that you need to bring with you to your appointment.
Community Action Agencies Start typing your county name: Documents will be required to verify your residence, income, and the members of your household. Your appointment notice will provide you with instructions about what is needed.
Proof of identity is needed for everyone over 18 School, college or university ID Tribal ID, alien registration/permanent residence card, temporary residence card Social security number for all household members, regardless of age Award letters; (i.e., Social Security, SSI, disability) W2 form, paycheck stubs within a 30-day period, 1099, IRS Tax Forms with appropriate schedules Unemployment determination letter Other documents deemed eligible to verify income Mortgage documents (i.e., deed) Utility Bill Information + Copies of energy bills (light bill, gas bill, etc.) CAA staff can also help get copies of your bills through the energy provider.
Bills must be in the name of the head of household or spouse If your bill is in the name of your landlord, but you are responsible for the bill, you will need documentation to verify your living situation such as: A notarized statement from the landlord Copy of a lease stating that you are responsible for the bill Other documents may be required .
Complete an Appointment with your Local CAA During your appointment, a CAA staff member will help you complete the full LIHEAP application and let you know if any additional information is needed for your case. You should bring as many required documents as possible to your appointment, but don’t miss your appointment if you don’t have all of your documents. You’ll have time to submit more information after your appointment.
Remember to submit any additional requested information as soon as possible. Receive a notice (letter) letting you know if your application was approved or denied You’ll receive a notice (letter) letting you know if you are approved to receive LIHEAP assistance. If you are approved to receive assistance, the CAA will pay the energy provider directly and you will see a credit on your next energy bill.
