Your application will be peer reviewed, which will take approximately six to eight weeks. Proposals with multiple internships or that require revisions may take longer. Please note there is a chance your application will be returned with a request for revisions before it is approved.
Following submission, partner organizations will receive an invoice (refundable if not approved), so that the intern receives payment when the project begins. Please note this invoice may be received before application approval, and does not guarantee approval. Once an outcome is available, Mitacs will contact all participants with the decision and applicable instructions.
Following formal approval and the receipt of the partner contribution, Mitacs forwards the Accelerate funds to the academic institution to administer the award. Yes, $20k units will be available for all new postdoc submissions in Accelerate, including eAcc and joint applications. $20k model: For the $20k postdoc option in Accelerate, can I still allocate $5k to research expenses?
Yes, for each $20K IU, up to $5k can be allocated to research expenses. $20k model: I am a postdoc currently on a $15k Accelerate, or I am a professor with a recently approved Accelerate project for a postdoc. Can I change to the $20k funding model?
The $20k funding model in Accelerate is available for PDFs on new applications, but approved internships will not change. The $20k funding model was previously available through Elevate, so it is not a net-new offering, and already-submitted Accelerate applications will not change. $20k model: I am a recent grad (post-PhD) but not a postdoc, can I access the $20k model?
No, this funding model is reserved for interns with postdoc status, just as Elevate was. $20k model: If a postdoc is replaced with a PhD intern (or any other level), can they keep the $20k funding model? No. The $20k model will only be available for postdocs.
If a postdoc is replaced with another level intern, the budget will need to be changed to the standard $15k Accelerate funding model. Are part-time students eligible? In order to participate in any Mitacs program, it is preferred that interns have full-time student or postdoctoral fellow status at their academic institution.
However, part-time students are also eligible for Accelerate internships that do not include international travel, provided that the following conditions hold: • They have student status at the academic institution for the duration of the internship • They are covered under the institution’s insurance, the same as full-time students • The institution is able to pay the intern a salary or stipend from the Mitacs grant • The student is able to commit to the project for the appropriate duration (Accelerate internships are four months and may be spread over up to six months to accommodate other commitments) Are Recent Graduates eligible?
Recent college and university graduates (any level) are eligible, at the discretion of the academic institution.
Must have status at a Canadian academic institution Check with your institution to find out what status(es) are available for recent grads Internship must start within two years of graduation Normally eligible for one 4-6-month internship but may do up to three depending on the needs of the project and the discretion of the academic institution All program expectations remain the same: the intern must have an academic supervisor and split their time between the academic institution and the partner organization Recent Graduates are eligible for standard Accelerate and Accelerate Entrepreneur International travel may be limited by circumstances external to Mitacs for some individuals (e.g., recent graduates may not be able to travel internationally for the project due to visa requirements for non-students).
Can a partner organization contribute more than $7,500 per internship? Yes. Partner organizations are welcome to contribute additional funding but Mitacs will not provide any additional funding outside of the standard award.
[This additional partner funding should be included in the application budget and the anticipated use of funds (e.g., stipend/salary top-up, specialized equipment).] Top-up funds must be received at Mitacs at the same time as the minimum contribution and will be added to the award and forwarded to the academic institution. Can I hold both an Accelerate and other grants at the same time?
Mitacs does not have any restrictions on its recipients holding other grants. You are responsible to determine if your other grants have such restrictions prior to applying to Accelerate. Can Mitacs allow for virtual interaction with partner organizations and academic institutions?
Direct interaction and supervision by the partner organization for a portion of the internship is a key feature of Mitacs’s Accelerate and BSI programs. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Mitacs required that interns spend time on site at the partner organization to benefit from this interaction and supervision.
Now that the technology to enable virtual work has greatly improved and many workplaces have hybrid or fully virtual operations, Mitacs will continue to allow interaction with the partner organization in our internship programs to take place virtually as well as in person.
When writing their application, participants should focus on the nature of the interaction with the partner and plan for high-quality interaction and supervision regardless of whether it takes place in person, virtually or hybrid. Mitacs still encourages on-site interaction at the partner when it is logistically feasible. * Note that Globalink are international mobility programs.
For this reason, travel and time spent on site with collaborators are still required in these programs. Can Mitacs help international students with immigration? International students are eligible to participate in Accelerate, however, Mitacs cannot give specific immigration advice.
We recommend that international students check with the international office at their academic institution, or contact a registered immigration specialist or consultant for advice. Can Mitacs help pay a student’s tuition fees? No, Mitacs does not offer any scholarships to cover university tuition fees.
Our programs are designed to offer support to students conducting research projects. How does the funding work? Internships are 4–6-month units of a research project, valued at $15K per unit, with $7,500 from both the partner organization and Mitacs, to support post-secondary research projects.
Funds flow through the academic institution with a stipend to the student at a minimum of $10K, with up to $5K to support research costs. Please refer to the Funding section for an illustrated explanation. If a student is interested in doing an internship, can Mitacs help them find a partner organization?
Mitacs cannot find partner organizations for individual interns. For tips on finding a partner organization, view the Research Partnerships 101 webinar , talk to your academic supervisor, or visit the Researchers Wanted page. Is the financial contribution of the partner organization subject to taxes?
Please note that the financial contribution of organizations is subject to applicable Goods and Services Tax (GST), Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) and/or Quebec Sales Tax (QST) (Collectively the value added tax or VAT). What constitutes a Conflict of Interest? Please refer to Mitacs Conflict of Interest Policy for more details.
If there is a conflict of interest, please discuss with your Mitacs Advisor before applying. What is needed to apply for Mitacs Accelerate projects? In order to apply for Mitacs Accelerate projects, you would need both an academic partner and a non-academic partner (e.g. a partner organization such as a for-profit or not-for-profit corporation) in Canada who would also be benefiting from the research.
In addition to a non-academic partner in Canada, your project may optionally include a non-academic partner abroad. What kinds of organizations can participate in Accelerate? For-profit corporations, including eligible intern-owned start-ups based at approved Canadian incubators, not-for-profit (NFP) corporations, Canadian municipalities, and hospitals in Canada can participate .
Projects with an NFP, municipality or hospital partner must demonstrate an economic or productivity orientation, which must be described in the proposal and will be evaluated by the peer reviewers. Contact your Mitacs representative to verify eligibility of NFP, municipality, and hospital partners. Interns must interact with partner organization personnel either on site or virtually.
If you’re not sure if a partner is eligible, contact a Mitacs representative or [email protected] . Who owns any intellectual property generated during an internship? Mitacs takes no position on intellectual property (IP).
IP is to be shared between the academic institution, its researchers, and the partner organization according to the academic institution’s IP rules, unless a separate agreement is negotiated. Mitacs can facilitate IP discussions with any Canadian academic institution. Please refer to the Program Administration section for a list of academic institutions with their own IP policies for Mitacs projects.
If an Accelerate internship has been approved, when will the funds be available? Mitacs forwards Accelerate funds to the student’s academic institution only after it has received the contribution from the student’s partner organization. Please allow two weeks for processing upon receipt of this contribution.
Interns travelling to Canada should be aware that their funding may not be available until they arrive in Canada. Mitacs recommends that interns contact their Canadian host institution’s Office of Research Services prior to the project to determine when they can access funds. $20k model: Can postdocs still use the $15k model or are they required to use the $20k model?
$20k will be the default for postdocs in Mitacs Plus, but both $20k and $15k will be available. Are the EDGE Training Courses mandatory? To maximize your experience, we ask students to complete the Mitacs Accelerate Orientation online session to prepare them for their internship, and the Mitacs Virtual Interactions Resources online session if they have virtual partner interaction.
The other online courses in the Accelerate Curriculum are skills-development courses suggested for students to support your professional development. Can a student do an Accelerate internship outside of Canada? All Accelerate internships must include a partner organization in Canada (for-profit or not-for-profit corporation, hospital or municipality) and may optionally include a partner organization(s) abroad.
Interns must have student, postdoc or recent grad status at an eligible Canadian post-secondary institution and must interaction with the Canadian partner organization. If applicable, they may also travel to interact with an international partner organization . Can a student hold concurrent or overlapping Mitacs internships?
No. Accelerate internships are full-time internships, which means participants are expected to be spending 50% of their time at the partner organization and 50% of their time at their host academic institution. • Interns cannot simultaneously hold Accelerate internships, or combine them with any other Mitacs internships or fellowships that overlap.
• While a Mitacs intern can hold multiple awards over time based on their degree level, internship or fellowship start and end dates cannot overlap. Participants who hold another Mitacs award or internship must complete it prior to receiving an Accelerate Award to start an internship. Can a student intern with a company for whom they previously worked?
Mitacs cannot support an internship in which the intern is doing work they were previously doing as an employee or contractor.
We can allow internships where the student has previously been an employee or contractor under the following conditions: • The intern has gone back to school to pursue a new post-secondary diploma or degree following their employment • The proposed internship is substantially different to the work they were doing as an employee or contractor • The intern is not an employee or contractor during the internship Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for internships/fellowships at organizations where they have already been a full-time employee.
Only if their employment was part time and/or very short-term can their eligibility for Mitacs programs be considered. Please discuss this situation with a Mitacs Business Development representative before applying. How can the flexible research funds be spent?
Mitacs follows Tri-Agency eligible expenses for use of funds. Please refer to the Mitacs Use of Funds policy for details of eligible expenses for Mitacs programs. How is the Certificate of Completion accessed?
Once the exit survey submission is confirmed, a Mitacs Program Certificate of Completion will be available in the interns/postdocs e-campus on EDGE. Is an Accelerate award a stipend or a salary? Will benefits be deducted?
Accelerate is offered in partnership with a student’s university, which administers their award. We recommend that students speak with their professor and institution about student status (“employees” or “trainees”), funding policies (“stipend” or “salary”), and potential deductions of benefits. Universities administer funds according to their individual institutional policies, which are flexible under Tri-Agency guidelines.
If benefits are included, they may be deducted from either a student’s pay or the accompanying research funds. What can be done if an internship proposal was not approved? Professors are welcome to revise and resubmit either a new version of the current proposal or a new proposal on a related, eligible project, per the guidance provided in the decision letter.
We provide feedback from Mitacs Research staff, external expert reviewers and/or the Mitacs Research and Innovation Council in all decision letters in order to help applicants improve proposals which were not initially approved. When can a student start their Accelerate internship?
Provided the individual has student or postdoctoral fellow status at their academic institution, they can start an internship at any point in their academic program. They must maintain that status throughout their internship.
Individuals that meet eligibility criteria for Recent Graduate status (Recent graduates will have to check with their academic institution to see what status(es) are available for them) must start the internship within 2 years of graduation. After their research proposal has successfully passed the research review, they will receive an email that confirms Mitacs received the partner contribution confirmation.
They will also be asked to confirm their start and end dates at that time. Students should not start until they receive the email confirming that Mitacs has received the partner funds. This is necessary to be able to pay the intern on time.
Please read the Mitacs Accelerate project start and end dates policy found in the downloadable Application Package zip file in the How To Apply section. Note that if a project includes international travel, allow additional time for visa purposes if required . When must the partner contribution be received at Mitacs?
Invoices must be paid in full to Mitacs prior to any internship funds being sent by Mitacs to the university. Please note that all partner funds must be sent directly to Mitacs and not to the university. The funds must be received in advance of the internship start date.
Certain requirements must be met to be eligible to request a project extension. Please see the criteria below and contact your Mitacs Advisor for next steps. If your

The National Leadership Grants for Libraries Program (NLG-L) supports projects that address critical needs of the library and archives fields and have the potential to advance practice and strengthen library and archival services for the American public. Successful proposals will generate results such as new models, tools, research findings, services, practices, and/or alliances that can be widely used, adapted, scaled, or replicated to extend and leverage the benefits of federal investment. Applications to IMLS should both advance knowledge and understanding and ensure that the federal investment made generates benefits to society. Specifically, the goals for this program are to generate projects of far-reaching impact that: • Build the workforce and institutional capacity for managing the national information infrastructure and serving the information and education needs of the public. • Build the capacity of libraries and archives to lead and contribute to efforts that improve community well-being and strengthen civic engagement. • Improve the ability of libraries and archives to provide broad access to and use of information and collections with emphasis on collaboration to avoid duplication and maximize reach. • Strengthen the ability of libraries to provide services to affected communities in the event of an emergency or disaster. • Strengthen the ability of libraries, archives, and museums to work collaboratively for the benefit of the communities they serve. Throughout its work, IMLS places importance on diversity, equity, and inclusion. This may be reflected in an IMLS-funded project in a wide range of ways, including efforts to serve individuals of diverse geographic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds; individuals with disabilities; individuals with limited functional literacy or information skills; individuals having difficulty using a library or museum; and underserved urban and rural communities, including children from families with incomes below the poverty line.
