Martin Luther himself was concerned with feeding the community. He had organized the ministry of the 16th century church to fall into three categories, one for the Church, one for the support of the ministry, and one for care for the poor.
He put into practice a “common chest,” a large trunk where locals in Wittenberg could give food, clothes, money, and other necessities as they were able, so that the ministry to the poor could continue. At the time, that was a revolutionary new practice, reforming the church so that everyone could have a way of giving to those who were in need. Ministry by the people, for the people.
It is in this ethos that the More than Enough Fund has been established. Applicants must be a synod congregation or ministry located in the Southwestern Texas Synod.
The focus of this grant fund is to provide financial support for any ministry or program that seeks to alleviate hunger, establish or reform systems for food equity in communities, advocate for vulnerable peoples around issues of food, food insecurity, or other hunger or food ministry opportunities, and/or promote healthy/nutritional eating habits and lifestyles.
