(R01) THE INVESTIGATOR INITIATED RESEARCH GRANT Most common mechanism used to support research by NIH investigators.
Open to applicants throughout their research careers, including those applying for the first time. (R03) NIH SMALL RESEARCH GRANT PROGRAM Research support of up to $50,000 per year. NIMH supports two different types of R03s.
(R15) ACADEMIC RESEARCH ENHANCEMENT AWARDS For scientists and institutions otherwise unlikely to participate extensively in NIH programs to support the Nation's biomedical and behavioral research effort.
NIH Exploratory/Developmental Research Grant Program (Parent 21) Encourages exploratory and developmental research projects in all NIMH-relevant scientific areas by providing support for the early and conceptual stages of these projects. The R21 program allows for 2 years of support and $275,000 over those years, with no single year exceeding $200,000. The research plan should not exceed 6 pages.
(R24) NIMH RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE SUPPORT PROGRAM Supports strengthening research environments and/or expanding existing capacities for conducting research in all fields related to mental health. (R25) NIMH RESEARCH EDUCATION GRANTS Fosters the development of mental health researchers via creative and innovative research educational programs including regional and national programs as well as programs involving a single institution.
NIMH Short Courses for Mental Health-Related Research Education (R25) NIMH Research Education Programs Supporting Psychiatric Residents (R25) NIMH Mentoring Networks for Mental Health Research Education (R25) NIMH Research Education Mentoring Programs for HIV/AIDS Research (R25) (R34) EXPLORATORY CLINICAL RESEARCH GRANTS Resources for evaluating the feasibility, tolerability, acceptability and safety of novel approaches to improving mental health and modifying health risk behavior.
Resources for obtaining the preliminary data needed as a prerequisite to a larger-scale (efficacy or effectiveness) intervention or services study.
(Collaborative R34) Collaborative R34’s for Pilot Study of Innovative Treatments in Mental Disorders Mental Health Research Dissertation Grant to Increase Diversity (R36) Supports doctoral candidates from racial and ethnic groups underrepresented in biomedical and behavioral science to pursue research careers in any area relevant to the research mission of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH).
