Valuable research results sometimes threaten to go unused because knowledge and innovations must endure a difficult path to the market. Financing is needed to bridge the divide between the research and the market. The programme Take-off bridges this funding gap in the early phase of an undertaking.
Creating innovative activity The aim of Take-off is to create innovative activity based on the knowledge development and utilisation by researchers at knowledge institutions. This activity can be about product, process, care or service innovation in the broadest sense of the word and within all scientific areas – from exact science and technology or life sciences to the humanities and social/behavioural sciences.
Take-off consists of two components: Feasibility studies (phase 1) – maximum length: 6 months Early stage routes (phase 2) – maximum length: 24 months Phase 1: Feasibility study For a feasibility study, researchers within Take-off can request financing of EUR 30,000 to a maximum of EUR 60,000.
This subsidy can be used to perform a feasibility study of the commercial application of innovative ideas and the start of activity on the basis of knowledge innovations from knowledge institutions. A feasibility study leads to a report which includes the possibilities of a start-up.
Phase 2: Vroegefasetrajecten With Take-off phase 2 ("Vroegefasetrajecten"), companies (start-ups) which have just been initiated by researchers or entrepreneurs can request a loan of 50,000 euros to a maximum of 450,000 euros. The loan is utilised for the project with a maximum term of two years. Interest is owed on the loan, which must be repaid within eight years.
With this loan, start-ups can take the steps which are necessary to make a knowledge innovation commercially viable. This could be a production process, market research, or a marketing or financing plan. This enables the entrepreneur to approach other private or public parties at the end of this route for investment in the continuation of the project.
There are two types of financing instruments: Take-off Phase 1 (feasibility studies) and Take-off Phase 2 (early-stage financing). Applications for Phase 1 can be submitted on an ongoing basis. The Call opens mid-January and closes at the beginning of December.
For Phase 2, there are generally two application rounds per year. The spring round opens in January and closes in February, and the fall round opens in July/August and closes in September. Consult the call page for the relevant instrument for deadlines and guidelines.
When the round is open, you will find more information about the calls under ‘Open Calls’ further down this page.

NSF restarted its SBIR/STTR programs on May 31, 2026 after a multi-month hiatus, with a $250 million FY26 allocation, a Project Pitch portal reopen on June 2, and a first full-proposal deadline of July 27, 2026. The big structural changes: a new Strategic Breakthrough tier that extends invited Phase II companies up to $30 million, and a $40 million pilot for next-generation scientific instrumentation. Phase I tops out at $305K, Phase II at $1.25M, with November 4 and March 4, 2027 windows behind the July 27 first deadline. For deep-tech startups that watched the NIH SBIR omnibus go dark and DARPA pull back on conventional Phase II slots, this is the most consequential reopening of the year — and the Strategic Breakthrough tier is the first time NSF has competed directly with venture capital at growth-stage check sizes.
