These grants reach communities where care is needed most with a focus on behavioral health, addressing gaps in healthcare, and the health of rural and remote communities. Premera has invested more than $100 million in communities across Washington and Alaska, reaching every corner of both states. Premera Social Impact invests in communities in need by concentrating on the health of the whole person.
These are the core beliefs supporting our work: Our vision of healthcare integrates physical and behavioral health for the wellness of the whole person. ### Care for underserved communities Everyone deserves quality care. We prioritize reaching people and places that need it the most.
There are no simple answers. Tough problems require new thinking to make progress. ### Partner for greater impact We collaborate with organizations that have shared goals—to improve and expand care.
## Making healthcare work better As we live out our purpose of improving customers' lives by making healthcare work better, we have the opportunity to be explicit about the impact we hope to see in our neighborhoods and communities. Our giving focuses on addressing behavioral health issues, with an emphasis on funding programs that help underserved communities, including people of color and low-income populations.
Community health data consistently shows disparities among these groups resulting in lower quality and access of healthcare services, worse health outcomes, and increased costs. Based on data from our recent national health index and state and local community health assessments, health conditions such as depression, anxiety, mood disorder, and substance abuse are common areas of concern.
These conditions are nearly universal experiences of individuals with behavioral health problems—with abuse commonly occurring in childhood. Research shows that healthcare from doctors and providers contributes to only 20% of a person's overall wellness. Many other factors play a role.
By promoting approaches that include resilience and trauma-informed practice, we can foster healing for individuals, families, and communities across Washington state and Alaska.
