The NBME Stemmler Grant Program supports the research and development of innovative assessment approaches with the potential to advance assessment in medical education. The application will open on April 6, 2026. Letters of Intent for the 2027 cycle are due June 29, 2026.
Medical education is evolving and the need for new and innovative ways to assess knowledge and skills is more critical than ever. The Edward J. Stemmler M.
D. Medical Education Research Grant Program provides grants to researchers taking on this important work by funding projects that have the potential to advance medical education assessment. Expected outcomes include advancements in the theory, knowledge, or practice of assessment at any point along the continuum of medical education, from undergraduate and graduate education and training through practice.
Both pilots and more comprehensive projects are of interest. Collaborative investigations within or among institutions are eligible and encouraged, particularly as they strengthen the likelihood of the project's contribution and success. Each year, as many as three awards of up to $150,000 each are given to research teams to support their efforts to drive innovations in the field.
Teams are required to include one junior member, which also provides an opportunity for researchers and faculty in the early stages of their career to receive mentorship and gain a broader understanding of medical education and assessment research. Letters of Intent for the 2027 cycle are due June 29, 2026.

Stemmler Grant Program Proposal Guidelines Stemmler Grant Program Proposal Budget Template When your project is approved for funding, the Stemmler team will work with you to complete the contract between your organization and NBME.
Funding is contingent upon completing the contract process and providing NBME with IRB documentation. Once your project is funded and in progress, interim and final reports are required as part of your contractual agreement. Guidelines for report submission are provided below.
For information specific to your obligations, please refer to your Stemmler Grant contract. You will receive reminders from the Stemmler team regarding due dates for your reports. You are required to submit an interim report midway through the grant funding period.
Release of the remainder of grant funds is contingent upon our receipt of your interim report. A one-time extension may be granted, but you must submit a detailed request in writing.

The Robotics Grant Program is a grant from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) that funds school-based robotics programs for elementary, middle, and high school students. Awarded through a competitive application process, the program provides up to $3,500 to eligible local education agencies (LEAs) in Alabama. Applicants must be public school systems submitting on behalf of schools with K–12 students.
