Nonprofits are essential to any crisis response. Locally, our grantees responded to the COVID-19 pandemic with creativity and resilience. Yet, the long-term impacts of community divestment put Black, Native and people of color at greater risk.
The Social Justice & Resiliency Fund was created to address these inequities by providing sustained funding for historically under-resourced communities. Grants support capacity building and systemic change efforts that are building a more robust and diverse coalition of community-based organizations to respond when the next crisis hits.
The Social Justice and Resiliency Fund provides funding to address challenges that continue to impact historically marginalized and underserved communities in Clark, Cowlitz and Skamania counties. Operating support for organizations serving Black, Indigenous, or People of Color, culturally specific organizations and coalitions seeking to reimagine the systems they work in.
Investments in organizations focused on systemic change, policy and advocacy efforts; and/or Capacity-building support to organizations that are investing in equity work and addressing disparities in their organization and/or programming. Flexible, unrestricted funding creates greater impact. Here are the two ways we award Social Justice and Resiliency Fund grants.

Who is being prioritized for funding? Black- and Indigenous-led organizations and organizations led by communities of color, organizations that are being led by the community for which they are serving, culturally-specific organizations, as well as organizations that are working to implement and operationalize equity and social justice will be prioritized for funding. What activities will this fund support?
Grants will support capacity building work including advocacy, community mobilization and community organization efforts. The Fund will also support the meaningful advancement of equity, diversity and inclusion for organizations working to institutionalize and operationalize equitable policies, practices and strategies. How are grantees identified and selected?
A grants committee comprised of diverse community leaders and Community Foundation staff selects grantees. They select grantees using an equity lens and will award grants to communities most impacted by systemic and structural barriers. If the Focus Grant program is closed, can I apply for the Social Justice and Resiliency Fund?

No. The grants committee accepts and reviews requests on a rolling basis. How much funding can I request? Grants vary in size and scope.
We will provide smaller, responsive grants in the $5K-$25K range. For organizations who have deep alignment with the fund’s criteria and would like to explore a capacity building grant larger than $25K, please contact a Program Officer . Can I apply more than once?
Yes. These funds are designed to address emerging needs and capacity building within culturally specific organizations. However, if you have already received a Social Justice and Resiliency Fund grant in the calendar year, please reach out to a Program Officer to discuss your funding needs.
How soon will I hear back from staff after submitting my request? You should hear back from a Program Officer within 5-7 business days. Grant awards will typically be made within four weeks of received request.

VGF grants will be used to develop and/or support community-based entities to recruit, manage, and support volunteers. CNCS seeks to fund effective approaches that expand volunteering, strengthen the capacity of volunteer connector organizations to recruit and retain skill-based volunteers, and develop strategies to use volunteers effectively to solve problems.
