*Statement of Impac t (Paragraph)(500 character maximum) The West Davidson Public Library branch in Lexington NC will implement an early liter - acy project to address de fi cits in early read - ing pro fi ciency. The library will provide a parent involvement literacy bag with early literacy strategies and concepts that promote reading and school readiness for 100 preschool students.
The project will help the library reestablish early literacy outreach and encourage school readiness following the impacts of COVID-19 on family engage - ment with pre-schools and public libraries. *Project Design (Paragraph)(1500 character maximum) Our Summer Reading Program starts on the 6th of June and ends July 15th. The fi rst week of the Summer Reading Program will feature a performer to kick off the Summer Reading Program.
Each week of the program we will have special events, guests and per - formers for the children. The last week of the Summer Reading Program we will celebrate with a picnic at a nearby park with fun games and lunch to celebrate the program participation the during the summer. Each week the preschool classes and groups will visit the library for our programs either with their parents or preschool summer day pro - grams.
During our special summer pro - gramming times we will offer a weekly sto - rytime, an activity, a performer and with this grant funding we will distribute a parent in - volvement literacy bag to each participant to take home with them. We will give out liter - acy bags for fi ve weeks to the parents bring - ing in their preschoolers or to the preschool staff to send these bags home with each child.
The bags will include a book, an activ - ity and materials to expand literacy learning and school readiness on their own. We will also include library information and a library (Paragraph)(1500 character maximum) he project will start June 6th and will end on July 15th.
During the week of the 6 th we will ask the parents or the preschool staff to complete a quick checklist measuring each preschoolers current level of learning and development. During the last week of the program in the third week of July, we will ask the same people to complete the same checklist on each child.
On our fi nal Sum - mer Reading Program event we will award prizes and incentives for completing the par - ent involvement literacy bag for each child. At the conclusion of the program, parents will have the knowledge and skills to help their children increase their literacy and school readiness skills naturally in their home setting with their parents.

The checklist will take approximately fi ve min - utes to complete and will be given to each child participating in the program to provide a baseline of each child’s school readiness and literacy levels at the beginning.
This as - sessment is based on the NC Early Learning Inventory from the NC Department of Public Instruction and is an observation-based for - mative assessment that measures fi ve do - mains of learning and development: Lan - guage & Literacy, Cognitive/ Mathematic, Cognitive/ Approaches to Learning, Social- Emotional and Physical.
When the abbrevi - ated checklist is administered at the end of the six week summer reading program, we will measure the learning and development gains that have been made in the last fi ve weeks.
The information will be shared with the parents in a fi nal packet including ways to continue developing literacy and devel - opmental skills at home to ensure school *Measurable Results - De fi ning Success (Paragraph)(1500 character maximum) By the end of the six week Summer Reading Program each child will increase their over - all Early Learning Inventory Assessment score through the consistent, daily interac - tions while using the materials in the parent involvement literacy bags.
After fi ve weeks, the children participating in this program that have used all of the literacy bag materi - als will have a higher overall improvement over their original score by at least 10%. *Available Technology (Paragraph)(1000 character maximum) Our library has several laptops, large screen TV’s, desktop computers and tablets.
These items may be used for our Summer Reading programming purposes, although this is not something that we will incorporate in the assessment or instructional plan unless our guest speakers need to conduct their visit virtually or provide a special video to sup - plement their in-person programming. *Are you requesting technology with this If yes, how will it be used to advance the literacy program we would be funding?

*Budget Allocations - Summer Reading Books - DGLF Request $2000 Incentives - DGLF Request $50 0 Instructional Materials - DGLF Request $500 *DGLF Budget Narrative (Long Paragraph)(1500 character maximum) $500 in incentive money would be spent on performers and prizes for the participants of this program.
The incentives would help to create excitement and anticipation about coming to the library while also providing a reward for participation. The majority of the grant funding ($2000) would go toward pur - chasing educational books. Five books per child would be purchased, one for each week during the summer reading program cover - ing the fi ve educational domains included in the school readiness assessment.
Each week the participant is encouraged to review the contents of the parent involvement literacy bag every night with their parent and be - come familiar with the book and materials. Instructional materials ($500) will also be purchased for the parent involvement litera - cy bags. These materials will introduce con - cepts and developmental skills in a fun and engaging way to encourage mastery.
