Virginia Health Care Foundation Grants is sponsored by Virginia Health Care Foundation. Awards grants to nonprofit organizations in Virginia to increase access to behavioral health, medical, and dental care for uninsured and medically underserved individuals.

Virginia Health Care Foundation VHCF grants fall into four broad categories, each of which has its own eligibility criteria and application process. Health access grants are awarded spring and fall each year; all other grants are issued only in response to specific requests for proposal.

Health Access : Most VHCF grants help uninsured Virginians receive medical, dental, and/or mental health care, either through a new approach or by replicating one of VHCF’s Models That Made It. Medicaid/FAMIS Application Assistance : VHCF Project Connect grants fund local enrollment efforts that help individuals and families apply for Cardinal Care (Virginia’s Medicaid/FAMIS programs).

Medication Assistance Programs : VHCF’s RxRelief Virginia grants fund caseworkers at local organizations who help eligible uninsured Virginians obtain free medicines for chronic illnesses via pharmaceutical companies’ Patient Assistance Programs. Special Initiatives ­ : Occasionally, VHCF creates special initiatives to address identified needs in Virginia.

Past initiatives have included approaches focused on elevating the degree of behavioral health integration at participating sites, increasing the number of behavioral health clinicians across the state, and facilitating partnerships to connect patients with stable and permanent medical homes, to name a few.

Grant applications are scrutinized to ensure strong project leadership, a well-articulated vision, a solid operating plan, evidence of community support, and long-term financial viability. Eighty-nine percent of VHCF-funded projects sustain themselves at or above the same level after VHCF funding ceases. “I know for a fact that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t gotten help.
