Work Based Learning Academies (Section 99cc) is a grant program from the Michigan Department of Education that funds local and intermediate school districts to implement work-based learning programs for students in grades 9-12 through partnerships with NAF (formerly the National Academy Foundation). The program provides $253,000 from the State School Aid Fund under Section 99cc of the School Aid Act.
Districts can select career-connected programs of study within five NAF career pathways: Engineering, Finance, Health Sciences, Hospitality and Tourism, or Information Technology, as well as programs aligned with the 16 national career clusters. Funds support two NAF entry options: Year of Planning at $12,000 for schools starting a new academy, or Fast Track for established career academies that already meet most NAF standards.
Applications must be submitted by June 30, 2026, with funds expended by September 30, 2026.

NAF Academies act as a solution to addressing these workforce needs by providing high school students with industry-focused courses and hands-on WBL experiences with professionals. Section 99cc of the 2022-23 School Aid Act provides $253,000 from the State School Aid fund for local districts to partner with NAF to implement WBL programs for students in grades 9-12.
