National Grid Foundation Launches RFP for $250,000 in General Operating Support Grants to Strengthen Nonprofits in New York and Massachusetts BROOKLYN, NY / WALTHAM, MA -- The National Grid Foundation launched a significant milestone in its philanthropic commitment with a Request for Proposals (RFP) for general operating support grants.
This initiative will empower and strengthen the long-term health and sustainability of nonprofits serving critical community needs across New York and Massachusetts. “Nonprofits are the heartbeat of our communities, providing essential services that support families and strengthen the social fabric of every community,” said Robert Simmons, Executive Director, National Grid Foundation.
“With nonprofits facing unprecedented challenges, general operating support is the hardest funding to secure. This RFP will provide critical resources to ensure that organizations serving our neighbors can continue to thrive for generations to come.
” The National Grid Foundation will award $250,000 annually in general operating support -- flexible funding that helps nonprofits cover essential day-to-day operations and strengthen organizational health, ensuring they can continue delivering vital services for their communities.
Be a 501(c)(3) located within National Grid’s New York or Massachusetts service area Have an annual budget of $1 million or less Align with one or more of the Foundation’s focus areas: Out of School Time STEM/STEAM Programs (K-5) and Early Literacy Programs (pre-K-3) Energy Affordability, Energy Literacy, and Energy Efficiency Interested organizations must register and submit applications by 5 p. m.
on Friday, March 20, 2026, at the National Grid Foundation application portal. The RFP comes as the Foundation increases its annual endowment distribution from 5% to 7% over the next two years, allowing it to expand its annual grantmaking to more than $4. 6 million in response to urgent community needs.
The National Grid Foundation was created to enhance the quality of life in local communities by supporting programs that address education, the environment and other local priorities. Its objective is based on the principle that giving people the tools to build hope is an essential ingredient in the development of individuals, families, and communities.
Since its inception in December of 1998, the Foundation has granted more than $43 million to local community organizations.
The Foundation is an independent charitable arm of National Grid, helping advance the company’s Grid for Good social impact community engagement initiative, dedicated to making a positive difference in local communities through three guiding pillars – increasing access to affordable energy, developing the energy workforce and supporting community resilience.
