Independent Artist Awards | MSAC Close the sitewide search Live painting at an event in Berlin A&E District. (Worcester County) Independent Artist Awards The Independent Artist Awards (IAA) program will not be offered in fiscal year 2026. The IAA program will remain paused in FY24 as staff and councilors continue to evaluate staffing capacity and how the program aligns with MSAC’s mission.
In FY23, MSAC staff worked to revise the IAA program to ensure that it meets the current needs of the arts sector continues to align with MSAC goals. The surveys, listening sessions, staff and council input, and a publicly-led program revision that were part of this work resulted in minimal recommended changes to the program.
The decision to pause considers limited staff capacity, owing to significant growth in other programs - including Creativity Grants, the Professional Development Opportunity Grant, and Grants for Organizations - in recent years.
In September 2023, the Council approved reallocating funding previously budgeted for FY24 IAA grants to the FY24 Grants for Artists (GFA) program, which supports working and living expenses for Maryland independent artists. Professional Development Opportunity Grant is a grant from the Maryland State Arts Council that funds professional development activities for individual artists and arts organizations throughout Maryland. The program supports participation in workshops, conferences, training programs, and other learning opportunities that advance economic sustainability and best practices in the arts. Eligible applicants include independent artists, Maryland-incorporated 501(c)3 nonprofit arts organizations operating for at least one year, units of Maryland local government, and Maryland colleges, universities, or schools. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis from September 2, 2025 through March 31, 2026 and are reviewed monthly. Awards are issued throughout the fiscal year, with payment processed within 6–8 weeks of grant agreement execution.
Arts Access Grants (Arts in Education Grants) is sponsored by Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC) via Arts for Learning Maryland. These grants support bringing Maryland artists and performers into public schools for residencies, workshops, assembly performances, Master Classes, etc. While not specifically for AI, a dance program incorporating AI for educational purposes could be relevant.
Jerome Early-Career Project Grants is a grant from Forecast Public Art, funded by the Jerome Foundation, that funds the creation of new public art projects by early-career artists based in Minnesota. Two grants of $8,000 each are awarded annually to support temporary or permanent public artworks anywhere in Minnesota. Projects may be supported by public or nonprofit agencies but private commissions are not eligible, and a secured project site is required at the time of application. The program places special emphasis on supporting BIPOC and Native artists, LGBTQIA+ artists, women artists, immigrant artists, rural artists, and artists with disabilities. Eligible applicants are Minnesota-based individual artists with 2–10 years of generative experience. The application deadline was October 15, 2025.
The Local Cultural Council Program is a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council distributing $1,000 to $10,000 through a statewide network of 329 Local Cultural Councils (LCCs) representing every city and town in the Commonwealth. Each LCC awards funds based on local community cultural needs as assessed by council members. Eligible applicants include artists, nonprofits, schools, and organizations pursuing arts, humanities, and science projects. Applications are submitted directly to local councils and are typically due by October 16. Grants from most LCCs are reimbursement-based. Massachusetts Cultural Council funds the LCCs centrally, which then regrant to community projects.
NEA Grants for Arts Projects runs its second FY cycle with a July 9 Part 1 (Grants.gov) deadline and a July 21 Part 2 (Applicant Portal) deadline.
