Alabama Historical Commission Announces 2026 Historic Sites Grant Program Montgomery, Ala. – The Alabama Historical Commission (AHC), the State Historic Preservation Office, has opened the application period for its 2026 Historic Sites Grant Program, funded through an appropriation by the Alabama Legislature and Governor Kay Ivy . Eligible historic sites may submit applications beginning February 11 , 2026 .
The AHC will administer a $3,600,000 grant program to support capital improvements and educational programming at historic sites and monuments across Alabama. “Our state’s history is important, and the Legislature realizes this,” said Senator Arthur Orr. “All across Alabama we have sites that remind us of who we are and who we were as a people.
Thanks to our partnership with the Alabama Historical Commission, we are able to preserve and maintain elements of our past. ” Grants are available to public or nonprofit entities that own monuments commemorating historical events or places, or that operate sites with a mission centered on historical education.
Priority consideration will be given to: Properties listed in or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places that were built before 1840 and are publicly owned and accessible Properties built in or before 1943 that are listed in or eligible for the National Register Properties built after 1943 that made significant contributions to the civil rights movement Individual grant awards will not exceed $75,000 and must be expended within two years of receipt.
