No defeat is made up entirely of defeat—since the world it opens is always a place formerly unsuspected. We take heart in these hopeful words of William Carlos Williams, poet chronicler of the New Jersey spirit. While this program has been suspended due to the 2025 cuts to federal funding, the world opened by the challenges we and our society face remains full of possibility.
We do not yet know what that world will look like, but we look to the wisdom of the humanities for guidance. History tells us that good ideas have a way of coming back around, and we're hopeful this one will. In the meantime, here are some steps you can take to support the humanities in New Jersey .
Incubation Grants encourage you to set out a bold vision, explore new ideas, and see where the process takes you. It might help you forge a new partnership or deepen an existing one, research a new topic or widen perspective on a current topic, talk to community stakeholders, or learn more about your audience. You might be planning a new program or taking a fresh approach to an existing one.
Please take a moment to review our complete guidelines . The spring grants cycle has been paused . We received notification early on April 3, 2025 that the funding we receive from the National Endowment for the Humanities – dollars we re-grant to organizations across New Jersey – has been terminated.
Because of this, we are forced to put our own Grants program on indefinite pause, pending the availability of future funding. An emergency statement from our executive director is available on our website . This is an evolving situation, as we and others across the sector fight to restore the federal funding that has already been appropriated by Congress.
We promise to stay in contact as things progress and will certainly let you know immediately if we are able to reopen this grant opportunity. We humbly thank you for your support and shared hope to weather this most daunting threat.
