Discuren Charitable Foundation | Inside Philanthropy OVERVIEW: The Discuren Charitable Foundation supports early childhood and K-12 education statewide in Washington. Grants have supported organizations of every size involved in early childhood, K-12 and college and career readiness both in and outside of school settings. This funder accepts letters of inquiry for three annual grantmaking cycles, but contact the director first for a brief conversation. Contact information is provided below.
Grants for Early Childhood and K-12 Education The Discuren Foundation names the following priorities for its education grantmaking: Programs and initiatives that promote kindergarten readiness among preschool-aged children; In- and out-of-school programming that works to improve academic outcomes in “core subject areas”; Programming that promotes social and emotional development in preschoolers and school-aged children and teens; Initiatives to improve “attachment to school” as “reflected in such indicators as attendance, disciplinary referrals, and school culture; and Initiatives that promote college and career readiness among high school students.
The Discuren Foundation supports educational nonprofits and schools, but does not support “private independent schools” or organizations that “promote religious doctrine. ” Past grantees include Mt. Vernon’s Foundation for Academic Endeavors, the University of Washington, the Child Care Action County of Thurston County, Rural Alliance of Deer Park and Communities in Schools of the Peninsula.
Discuren’s grants range from $5,000 to $305,000. Grantmaking is state-wide in Washington, with many grants serving educational programs for rural communities. All grantmaking prioritizes organizations working with underserved students.
Organizations of all sizes have received funding, and Discuren makes dozens of grants each year. In past years, the foundation has run three grantmaking cycles with letters of inquiry due early in March, June and September. The Robotics Grant Program is a grant from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) that funds school-based robotics programs for elementary, middle, and high school students. Awarded through a competitive application process, the program provides up to $3,500 to eligible local education agencies (LEAs) in Alabama. Applicants must be public school systems submitting on behalf of schools with K–12 students. The grant supports the purchase of robotics equipment and program development aligned with AMSTI guidelines. Applications are submitted online through the AMSTI Robotics Grant portal.
