NIAID conducts and supports basic and applied research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases. Under the guidance of a mentor, fellows will be exposed to a variety of global health research activities that are STEM-based and will focus on selected infectious diseases of substantial health importance in developing countries.
Projects range from science diplomacy, bilateral research programs, multilateral initiatives, opportunity-driven scientific engagement, communication efforts, and analysis of regional biomedical capacity and research.
As a participant in a STEM research participation program you will learn about different NIH support mechanisms and different collaborative research programs involving NIAID, how to use various NIH and NIAID databases for data analysis, how to identify metrics and key indicators needed to evaluate any program, how to compare success between different types of collaborative research programs, how to make recommendations for future programs based on the available data, and learn the importance of science diplomacy in improving international relations.
