CDMRP Restores $1.27B Across 34 Medical Research Programs for FY2026

The Department of Defense's Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs announced $1.27 billion in research funding across 34 programs for fiscal year 2026, a significant recovery after the Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act slashed CDMRP funding by 57 percent.
President Biden signed the Consolidated Appropriations Act on February 3, unlocking the funds. While the total falls short of the $1.51 billion appropriated in FY2024, it represents a decisive restoration of one of the federal government's most versatile medical research funding streams.
Where the Money Goes
The Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program dominates with $370 million spread across 52 disease topics. Peer Reviewed Cancer Research follows at $165 million covering 20 cancer types. Disease-specific allocations include:
- Breast Cancer: $145 million
- Prostate Cancer: $75 million
- Ovarian Cancer: $50 million
- Traumatic Brain Injury & Psychological Health: $40.5 million
- ALS: $40 million
- Melanoma: $40 million
- Spinal Cord Injury: $33 million
Smaller but notable programs include Tick-Borne Disease ($7 million) and Hearing Restoration ($5 million), reflecting congressional responsiveness to emerging health priorities.
