FEMA Awards $875 Million to Secure FIFA World Cup Host Cities

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has awarded $625 million to all 11 cities hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 matches, the largest single-event security grant in the agency's history. A separate $250 million through the Counter Unmanned Aircraft Systems (C-UAS) Grant Program brings total federal security investment to $875 million for the tournament, which kicks off June 11.

What $875 Million in Security Funding Covers

The primary $625 million tranche, administered through the FIFA World Cup Grant Program established under the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, funds operational security exercises, staff background checks, cybersecurity hardening, and surge capacity for police and emergency response at FIFA venues, hotels, and transportation hubs. Host cities — including New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Seattle, Kansas City, San Francisco, and Boston — received allocations following what FEMA described as "thorough reviews of all applications."

The $250 million C-UAS program targets a threat that barely existed during the last U.S.-hosted World Cup in 1994: unlawful drone activity. Host cities can use the funding to detect, identify, track, and neutralize unauthorized unmanned aircraft near match venues.

"The 2026 FIFA World Cup is expected to be the largest sporting event in history, so it must also be the most secure," said Karen S. Evans, Senior Official Performing the Duties of the FEMA Administrator.

Where the Subcontracting Opportunities Are

While the primary grants flow to state and local governments, the downstream procurement is substantial. Host cities will need to acquire cybersecurity services, physical security infrastructure, counter-drone detection systems, communications equipment, and surge staffing — all on compressed timelines with the tournament less than three months away.

Security firms, emergency management consultants, counter-UAS technology vendors, and cybersecurity providers should engage directly with host city procurement offices now. Many contracts will be issued under expedited timelines. Organizations tracking grant-funded procurement can find additional analysis on the Granted blog.
