Google.org is accepting applications through April 17 for its $30 million Impact Challenge: AI for Science, offering grants of $500,000 to $3 million to organizations using artificial intelligence to accelerate scientific breakthroughs.

Two Focus Areas, Global Eligibility

The challenge targets two domains: health and life sciences (genomics, neuroscience, predictive biology) and climate resilience and environmental science (biodiversity modeling, agricultural systems, ocean science). Eligible applicants include nonprofits, social enterprises, academic institutions, and research organizations worldwide.

Previous recipients include Spore.Bio, the Technical University of Munich, the University of Washington, the Innovative Genomics Institute, The Sainsbury Laboratory, and the University of Liverpool—a mix of established research universities and specialized scientific organizations that illustrates the breadth of competitive proposals Google expects.

What Winners Get Beyond the Check

Funding is only part of the package. Selected organizations may participate in a Google.org Accelerator that includes six months of dedicated pro bono technical support from Google engineers and access to Google Cloud credits. For research teams that lack production-grade AI infrastructure, that technical support can be as valuable as the grant itself.

Applications are reviewed by Google.org staff, Google subject matter experts, and external specialists from Renaissance Philanthropy and the Centre for Public Impact. Proposals are scored on four criteria: scientific ambition with clear quantifiable metrics, innovative and responsible AI use, feasibility with realistic execution plans, and potential for scaled impact beyond the immediate project scope.

How to Stand Out in a Crowded Field

AI must be a core component of the proposed work, not a bolt-on feature. Google is looking for projects where machine learning fundamentally changes what is scientifically possible—not incremental efficiency gains. Proposals should demonstrate both technical depth and a clear path from research to real-world application.

With $30 million on the table and a global applicant pool, competition will be intense. Researchers can use grantedai.com to discover complementary funding opportunities that strengthen their portfolios. In-depth analysis of AI research funding trends is available on the Granted blog.

The application deadline is April 17, 2026.
