Google.org Launches $60 Million AI Push for Science and Government

Google.org has opened two complementary funding challenges that together put $60 million on the table for organizations applying artificial intelligence to public services and scientific research.

The AI for Government Innovation Impact Challenge offers $30 million in grants of $1 million to $3 million for nonprofits, social enterprises, and academic institutions that partner with governments to deploy AI for healthcare access, disaster resilience, and economic development. Applications close April 3, 2026.

A parallel AI for Science Impact Challenge puts another $30 million behind researchers using AI to accelerate breakthroughs in health and life sciences, climate resilience, and environmental science, with grants of $500,000 to $3 million. That deadline is April 17, 2026.

What Sets These Grants Apart

Beyond the funding, selected organizations gain entry to a Google.org Accelerator — a six-month program providing dedicated pro bono technical support from Google AI experts and Google Cloud credits. For cash-strapped research labs and nonprofits, the technical mentorship may prove as valuable as the dollars themselves.

Google is evaluating proposals on four criteria: measurable impact backed by data, innovative use of generative or agentic AI aligned with Google's AI Principles, feasibility with capable teams and clear milestones, and scalability potential across regions. Reviews are handled by Google.org staff, Google subject matter experts, and external partners including Apolitical and the Centre for Public Impact for the government challenge, and Renaissance Philanthropy for the science challenge.

Who Should Apply

The government challenge explicitly seeks applicants that can demonstrate existing government partnerships — solo applicants without a public-sector partner are unlikely to advance. Focus areas include AI-powered health triaging, crisis forecasting, disaster response, and infrastructure optimization.

The science challenge is broader, welcoming proposals across genomics, neurology, predictive biology, biodiversity, and sustainable systems. The program remains open to exceptional proposals in other scientific fields that demonstrate significant potential impact.

Deadlines Grant Seekers Cannot Afford to Miss

The government innovation deadline of April 3 is just 11 days away, while the science deadline of April 17 provides slightly more runway. Both applications are submitted through Google's Submittable portal. Organizations should begin assembling government partnership documentation and technical feasibility plans immediately.
