The Mozilla Foundation is investing $1 million in technologists building AI tools that strengthen democratic institutions rather than undermine them. The Democracy x AI Cohort will fund 10 projects at $50,000 each, with two top performers advancing to a Sustain Track worth an additional $250,000 — bringing the maximum award to $300,000 per team.
Initial proposals are due March 16, 2026 at 11:59 PM Pacific. That leaves less than a week.
What Mozilla Is Looking For
The cohort targets three categories: information ecosystem resilience (tackling misinformation, building collective verification, improving algorithmic transparency), institutional transparency (government data infrastructure, public records tools), and civic space protection (privacy-preserving coordination for activists, surveillance resistance).
Mozilla wants working technology with demonstrated traction — this is not a research grant for early concepts. Applicants need a committed team ready to execute over 12 months and a clear path toward open-sourcing at least some of their code during the grant period.
The Support Package
Beyond funding, selected projects receive monthly cohort calls, expert mentorship from Mozilla's network of technologists and activists, tailored workshops, and structured 1:1 check-ins with Mozilla staff. The program is designed around accountability: expect regular milestones and progress reviews, not passive support.
The two teams advancing to the Sustain Track will receive intensive resources to scale their solutions for long-term sustainability.
