The OpenAI Foundation announced it will invest at least $1 billion in grants over the next year, marking one of the largest single-year philanthropic commitments from an artificial intelligence company. The pledge, disclosed March 25, targets life sciences and disease research, AI resilience, economic opportunity, and community programs.

Board Chair Bret Taylor said the foundation aims to "enable the use of AI to find solutions to humanity's hardest problems, transform what people are capable of, and deliver real benefits in people's lives."

Where the Money Will Go

The foundation named two senior leaders to direct spending. Jacob Trefethen, formerly of Coefficient Giving where he oversaw more than $500 million in grantmaking, will lead life sciences and disease-curing initiatives. OpenAI co-founder Wojciech Zaremba will head AI resilience efforts focused on mitigating risks from increasingly capable AI systems.

Priority areas include biological threat prevention, AI literacy programs, mental health — particularly for children — and strengthening civic life. The foundation distributed $40.5 million in December to community-based nonprofits as an initial tranche.

A $25 Billion Long-Term Vision

The $1 billion annual commitment is part of a broader $25 billion pledge announced in October 2025. An advisory board recommended the nonprofit "significantly increase resources and consult extensively with communities about AI impacts" when shaping grant priorities.

The foundation is recruiting an executive director to oversee grantmaking operations, signaling that the infrastructure for distributing funds at scale is still being built.

What Grant Seekers Should Do Now

Nonprofits working in life sciences, AI safety, mental health, and economic resilience should monitor the OpenAI Foundation for forthcoming application details. With $1 billion to deploy in a single year, the foundation will need partners across sectors — and quickly. Organizations can track emerging opportunities like these through Granted, which monitors AI and foundation funding announcements in real time.

The pledge arrives as Fortune reported, the foundation intends to focus on protecting society from biological threats and funding efforts to apply AI to the life sciences — areas where grant seekers with strong technical capabilities and community partnerships will be best positioned.
