Research Grant Program - Fhana FHANA Research Grant Program GRANT APPLICATIONS ARE DUE October 1st 2026.
The goal of this program is to support equine veterinarians and equine researchers in the United States of America, Canada, or European Union Countries who are in programs that will advance their research skills with a goal of continuing an academic or research career path that will ultimately improve the health and welfare of Friesian horses.
Pilot studies or preliminary studies which are part of a major study, or which will lead to a major study are of particular interest. Small stand-alone studies will also be considered. Areas of Research Interes t Areas of research interest are below.
However, proposals on any topic will be considered for funding, and all researchers are encouraged to apply.
· Delayed Gastric Emptying, Gastroparesis, and Gastric Rupture · Chronic Progressive Lymphedema (CPL) · Chronic Proliferative Pastern Dermatitis (CPPD) · Connective Tissue Disorders · Insect Bite-Hypersensitivity Access to Friesian Study Candidates The inclusion of Friesian horses in the FHANA Research Grant Program is a high priority for the Association.
To facilitate easier access to Friesian horse study candidates, the FHANA Health Committee is available to assist researchers, including soliciting appropriate study candidates from FHANA members and Friesian owners, gathering/screening owner-provided diagnosis documentation (veterinarian reports, necropsies, etc.), providing pedigree documentation for study candidates, and coordinating research sample collection and shipping.

Specific Requirements and Limitations · Post-DVM (or equivalent) trainees in a graduate program (masters or doctoral), residency training program, or research fellowship program. · DVM/Ph. D.
combined program candidates at accredited veterinary colleges. · Ph. D.
equine researcher or Ph. D. research candidate mentored by an equine veterinary researcher on the faculty at a university or in practice.
Research is to be completed within a one-year period and presented in a final report to FHANA. This report should include a plan for the pursuit of funding for ongoing studies or plans for a publication for stand-alone studies. Funding requests should not exceed $10,000.
Budgetary items may include graduate student tuition, lease, and care of horses, consumable supplies, research service contracts, and publication costs. Expenses or salaries for mentors are not allowed. No overhead is available for these trainee grants.
Approved grants will be announced in November 2026 unless notified otherwise. The deadline for proposals is no later than 12:00 pm (EDT) on October 1st 2026. Research Grant Application FHANA Research Grant Donation THE FHANA Resource Book is now available for order.
