Fresh food builds strong communities Target and Shipt are launching the 2026 Garden Grants program to seed new urban gardens and restore existing gardens in select metro areas.

By opening Garden Grants, Target and Shipt are supporting up to 50 community-led urban garden projects across Chicago, Detroit, New York, and Birmingham, Ala. Grant awards will be $6,000 each. The grant empowers awardees to establish, revitalize, and expand urban gardens, making them hubs of community connection and empowerment.

The possibilities are broad — from adding walkways and path lights, to installing irrigation and trellises. Give your urban garden a good foundation with raised beds, irrigation, and fencing. Awardees can use grant funding toward seeds, soil, and gardening tools like tillers and wheelbarrows.

Awardees can also use grant funding to buy garden-based curriculum materials. 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving senior living communities or community-based organizations leading or planning an urban garden initiative Applications are open from March 16, 2026 to April 17, 2026. Grant awards will be announced in May 2026, just in time for the growing season.

If you’re planning an urban gardening initiative, we encourage you to go ahead and apply even if you haven’t broken ground yet. Do I have to apply on behalf of an organization, or does this grant apply to individuals too? This particular grant is awarded to organizations who have (or are planning to have) an urban gardening initiative.

It is not open to individuals. Examples of eligible organizations include: 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organizations serving senior living communities or community-based organizations leading or planning an urban garden initiative How can this grant help my organization build, revitalize, or expand our urban garden? Awardees can use grant funds for: Garden infrastructure such as raised beds, irrigation, and fencing Soil, seeds, and garden tools Enhancements to launch, restore, or expand existing garden spaces Garden-based curriculum materials Community workshop supplies Need some ideas? Here’s a few: Create gravel or stone pathways to make the space more accessible and walkable.

Buy tillers, wheelbarrows, hoses, and other tools to make planting easier and more efficient. Add lighting to make the garden more welcoming to community members. Incorporate gardening skills into your classroom by purchasing curriculum guides and more.
