ADAI Small Grants Program | Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute > Our Work: Research & Other Projects > ADAI Small Grants Program ADAI Small Grants Program Next application deadline: September 9, 2026 The Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute (formerly the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Institute) works to stimulate and facilitate UW research on alcohol and drug use and addiction through its Small Grants Program, which awards funds to UW researchers for pilot studies and developmental research.
The scope ranges from pharmacology of drugs to studies of clinical treatment strategies, prevention, and social policy issues. UW researchers should consider the Small Grants Program as a resource to help develop research through initial funding for promising pilot projects which may ultimately be developed into full studies with outside funding. Deadlines each year are typically Spring (March) and Fall (September/October).
The next deadline is September 9, 2026. Award limit: $30,000 to faculty and research scientists; $20,000 to mentored predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows. Since 1973, ADAI has awarded nearly $5,000,000 to researchers in more than 40 departments at the University of Washington.
Currently, two levels of funding are available: faculty and research scientists may apply for funding up to $30,000; mentored predoctoral students and postdoctoral fellows may receive up to $20,000.

Funding decisions are based on scientific merit assessed by peer review, relevance of the question to the field, innovation, and potential for new insights into the problems of substance use. Anonymous comments from the reviewers are returned to the investigators to provide constructive feedback, which is often used to improve a non-funded grant for future re-submission.

Benefits to the University The ADAI Small Grants Program has made a significant impact on the University and the field of alcohol and drug research and study overall: many millions of dollars in funding from NIH and other sponsors have been awarded to UW researchers who conducted pilot work using ADAI funds.
