That includes parks, rec centers, malls, and restaurants. Those applying for the grant can request up to $10,000 per table. Previously, funding was capped at $5,000.

If awarded, this funding can be used to buy and install powered, height-adjustable, adult-sized changing tables for family restrooms. "Adult-sized changing tables have the ability to change lives and communities for children with disabilities, as well as those caring for aging family members," said DDA Commissioner Brad Turner.

According to the DDD, approximately 200,000 Tennesseans need help with daily living activities, like using the restroom. Those who need adult-sized changing tables often have to choose between unhygienic settings or staying home. "With an increase in grant funding, we hope more businesses and municipalities will apply and help create more inclusive spaces for Tennessee families and individuals," Tuner said.

The Tennessee General Assembly approved $1 million for this grant program in 2022. This funding has covered the costs of installing more than 40 adult-sized changing tables across the state. The Creative Discovery Museum in Chattanooga is one previous grant recipient.

The Tennessee Department of Transportation is working to install changing tables in all rest areas and welcome centers over the next several years. The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation is also working to install changing tables in all state parks.
