As part of our ongoing efforts, we are pleased to announce opportunities for funding through grants to organizations that align with our commitment to reducing the racial disparities in maternal and infant mortality. Advancing Healthy Births: An Equity Plan for Michigan Families and Communities The Southeast Michigan Perinatal Quality Improvement Coalition (SEMPQIC) is committed to reducing the disparities in maternal, perinatal, and infant health outcomes between Black and White communities.
Through Advancing Healthy Births: An Equity Plan for Michigan Families and Communities, SEMPQIC collaborated with community-based organizations to create lasting, meaningful change.
To continue striving towards the collective vision, and promoting further alignment of statewide programs and strategies, the Advancing Healthy Births plan focuses on four Priority Areas, rooted in equity: health across the reproductive span; full-term, healthy weight babies; infants safely sleeping; and mental, behavioral health and well-being.
Thousands of vulnerable families across southeast Michigan benefited from these programs, which offered education, home visits, community baby showers, transportation to medical appointments, and referrals to address critical needs. These services enhanced access to care, supported parenting, and promoted well-being throughout the perinatal journey. Special emphasis was also placed on engaging and supporting fathers in these efforts.
Through Advancing Healthy Births, SEMPQIC remains dedicated to improving outcomes for mothers and infants, reducing health disparities, and addressing the systemic root causes that drive them. SEMPQIC awarded $2.

After a thoughtful and thorough review, 39 organizations were awarded funding totaling $2,203,000. SEMPQIC’s 2025 AHB mini grant awardees are all working to improve birth outcomes, reduce health disparities, and address the root causes of these disparities. Projects funded are focused on maternal and infant health and fatherhood programs, infant safe sleep, breast-feeding, perinatal mood anxiety disorders, and perinatal bereavement.
In addition, 16 organizations received support to train staff, implement, or enhance childbirth education programs, ensuring families are informed and empowered before, during, and after birth.
