Past winners and funding trends for this program
The NSF Computer and Information Science and Engineering: Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) program (NSF 25-543) supports foundational computing research and education with a strong emphasis on AI and machine learning. The program funds research that advances the foundations of computing including AI/ML theory, algorithms, systems, and applications. Future CoRe supports small to medium-sized research projects that can have significant impact on computing foundations. The program has target dates of February 5, 2026 and September 10, 2026 for proposal submissions (note: these are target dates, not deadlines, meaning proposals may be submitted at any time but will be reviewed in batches around these dates). Investigators may not serve as PI, co-PI, or Senior/Key Personnel on more than two proposals submitted within any consecutive 12-month period across all Future CoRe programs. This is one of NSF's primary mechanisms for funding fundamental AI and machine learning research at U.S. academic institutions, covering areas such as machine learning theory, natural language processing, computer vision, robotics foundations, and human-AI interaction.
The NSF CISE Future Computing Research (Future CoRe) program supports research in computing and communication foundations, intelligent systems, and network systems. The program funds innovative research that advances the frontiers of computing including artificial intelligence, machine learning, computer vision, natural language processing, and robotics. This is one of NSF's largest computing research programs with $280 million in total budget. Projects can address fundamental computing challenges, novel AI architectures, scalable intelligent systems, and next-generation network infrastructure.
The Hydrocarbons and Geothermal Energy Office's University Training and Research program funds coal, oil and gas, and geothermal R&D at U.S. colleges and universities — but every proposal must include a non-academic partner and must build training modules that outlive the award. The LOI deadline is October 1, 2026, with full applications 15 days later. Here is what that compressed window means and why the workforce framing changes what a competitive proposal looks like.
Read articleDOE just committed $171.5M for next-gen geothermal field tests and $30M for superhot rock drilling through ARPA-E. With eight bipartisan permitting bills advancing and solar/wind credits being phased out, geothermal has become the administration's preferred clean energy bet.
Read articleOn September 21, 2026 DOE selected 21 projects under DE-FOA-0003472 — five EGS field tests and 16 exploration wells — for up to $99 million of a $171.5 million authorization. The solicitation is structured to reopen for up to 72 months on roughly annual cycles. Here is how to position for the next one.
