Mathematics & Physical Sciences Mathematics & Physical Sciences The Simons Foundation announces new funding starting in 2018 for its Africa Mathematics Project, designed to nurture and accelerate high-level mathematics research in Africa.

The three current awardees will receive five-year renewal grants to continue their work to support graduate students, conferences, international exchanges and other research efforts. Université des Sciences et Techniques de Masuku, Gabon Develop the Pole of Research in Mathematics and their Applications in Information Security in Sub-Saharan Africa Lead Researcher: Tony Ezome, Ph. D.

The aim of this project is to create a synergy among researchers working in the field of algebraic geometry and applications, including cryptography and robot kinetics, and to enhance the diffusion of this topic in higher education in Africa.

This project involves researchers from the Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar in Senegal, Polytechnic School of Thiès in Senegal, the University of Bamenda in Cameroon, the Université Polytechnique de Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso, the Université Dan Dicko Dankoulodo de Maradi in Niger and the Université de Sfax in Tunisia.

Botswana International University of Science & Technology Research and Graduate Studies in Mathematics and its Applications: A Network Approach Lead Researcher: Edward M. Lungu, Ph. D.

The main goal of this project is to promote training and research in biomathematics supported by new results from research in the areas of pure mathematics, such as analysis and geometry.

This project involves researchers from the University of Zambia, University of Botswana, the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, the University of Namibia, the University of South Africa, Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources, the National University of Science and Technology in Zimbabwe and the Stellenbosch University in South Africa.

Université Cheikh Anta Diop de Dakar, Senegal Non-Linear Analysis, Geometry and Application Project Lead Researcher: Diaraf Seck, Ph. D. The main focus of this project is to contribute to the development of non-linear analysis and geometry and their applications to solve real-world problems, such as coastal erosion, urban networks and cancer models.

This project involves researchers from the Université Gaston Berger de Saint-Louis in Senegal; the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences Senegal; the Université Alioune Diop de Bambey in Senegal; the Université Assane SECK of Ziguinchor in Senegal; the Université d’Abomey-Calavi in Benin; the Université Polytechnique de Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso; the Universitiés of Ouaga II and 3S in Burkina Faso; the Université deCocody in the Ivory Coast; École Normale Supérieure de Libreville, Gabon; and the Centre Universitaire de N’Zérékoré in Guinea.
