Agricultural Extension at 1890 Land-grant Institutions Section 1444 is sponsored by U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) - National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA). This program supports agricultural extension activities at 1890 Land-grant Institutions.

1890 Land-grant Institutions Programs | NIFA The lifecycle of grants and cooperative agreements consists of four phases: Pre-Award, Award, Post-Award, and Close Out. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture is committed to serving its stakeholders, Congress, and the public by using new technologies to advance greater openness.

Technical Assistance Webinar: The Equipment Grants Program (EGP) The Equipment Grants Program seeks to provide eligible institutions with the opportunity to acquire a shared-use piece of equipment/instrument that supports their research, research training, and extension goals. The National Institute of Food and Agriculture provides leadership and funding for programs that advance agriculture-related sciences.

1890 Land-grant Institutions Programs The 1890 land-grant institutions are historically black universities that were established under the Second Morrill Act of 1890. NIFA's 1890 land-grant institutions programs are intended to strengthen research, Extension and teaching in the food and agricultural sciences by building the institutional capacities of the 1890 Institutions.

The 1890 land-grant system consists of the following 19 universities: Alabama A&M, Alcorn State University, Central State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Fort Valley State University, Kentucky State University, Langston University, Lincoln University, North Carolina A&T State University, Prairie View A&M University, South Carolina State University, Southern University, Tennessee State University, Tuskegee University, University of Arkansas Pine Bluff, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Virginia State University and West Virginia State University.

Webinar for Stakeholder Feedback on Centers of Excellence at 1890 Institutions On May 20, 2020, NIFA hosted a listening session to receive feedback for the Centers of Excellence at 1890 Institutions (1890 COEs) Program. 1890 Institution Teaching, Research and Extension Capacity Building Grants (CBG) Program The 1890 CBG Program is intended to support research, teaching, and Extension by awarding grants that address key problems of national, regional, and multi-institutional importance in sustaining all components of agriculture, including farm efficiency and profitability, ranching, renewable energy, forestry (both urban and agroforestry), aquaculture, rural communities and entrepreneurship, human nutrition, food safety, family and consumer sciences, biotechnology, and conventional breeding.

Providing this support requires the CBG program to build and strengthen research, teaching and Extension capacity needed to advance fundamental sciences as well as translational research and development in support of agriculture; and coordinate opportunities to build on these discoveries at the 1890 Land-grant Universities. The 1890 Facilities Grant Program is intended for the acquisition and improvement of agricultural and food sciences facilities and equipment, including libraries, so that the 1890 land-grant institutions, including Tuskegee University, West Virginia State University and Central State University may participate fully in the development of human capital in the food, agricultural, and human sciences.

Evans-Allen Research Program The purpose of this funding is to support agricultural research activities at 1890 Land-grant Universities, including Tuskegee University and West Virginia State University. For more information, see the Agricultural Research at 1890 Land-grant Institutions page .

The 1890 Extension Formula grants assist diverse audiences, particularly those who have limited social and economic resources, to improve their access to positive opportunities through outreach education. The funds provide useful, research-based educational opportunities that respond to the changing needs of limited-resource clients.

The funds support farmers of small and medium-size family farms and new producers in owning and operating viable businesses; enhance the marketing skills of farmers and assist them in placing their products in local, national, and global markets; assist small, limited-resource producers in developing marketing alternatives that enhance profitability; and enhance the ability of minority farmers and landowners to acquire adequate capital, adopt new technologies, and use estate planning and tax incentive programs to retain operations and increase profitability.

Scholarships for Students at 1890 Institutions (1890 Scholarships) Program The 1890 Scholarships Program is intended to provide scholarships to support recruiting, engaging, retaining, mentoring, and training of undergraduate students at the 1890 land-grant institutions, resulting in baccalaureate degrees in the food and agricultural sciences and related fields.

The scholarships are intended to encourage outstanding students at 1890 institutions to pursue and complete baccalaureate degrees in the food and agricultural sciences and related fields that would lead to a highly skilled food and agricultural systems workforce. Centers of Excellence at 1890 Institutions (1890 COEs) Program The intent of the 1890 COEs Program is to provide support for Centers of Excellence that were originally established in 2015 in conjunction with the 125th Anniversary of the Second Morrill Act of 1890.

The 1890 COEs are hosted by 1890 Land-grant Institutions with the goals of: 1) increasing profitability and rural prosperity in marginalized farming communities; 2) addressing critical needs for enhanced international training and development; and 3) increasing diversity in the science, technology, engineering, agriculture and mathematics (STEAM) pipeline.
