KALRO is the premier research organization, charged with the main mandate of promoting, streamlining, coordinating and regulating research in crops, livestock, genetic resources and biotechnology in Kenya. KALRO has received funding from the European Union to implement the AgriFI Kenya Climate Smart Agricultural Productivity Project, a five-year project.

Part of the funds will be used to support dissemination of technologies through public-private partnerships (PPP) via competitive sub-grants. The key focus will be increased adoption of technologies thus enabling farmer integration into commodity value chains markets.

Proposals that are innovative, need based and promote agribusiness along the value chain continuum from pre production, production, processing, storage, trading, logistics and consumption have the highest chance of winning. It is expected that actions under this call will strengthen capacity of rural communities to access and adopt technologies and subsequently result in increased production, job creation and incomes.

Priority value chains and technologies for upscaling: * Lot 1: 4 new high nutrient rich and high yielding bean varieties- Angaza, Metameta, Nyota and Faida. * Lot 2: 3 new high yielding green gram varieties – Ndengu Tosha, Biashara and Karembo. * Lot 3: 2 new grain amaranth varieties – TerereSmart and KATGOLD.

* Lot 4: 1 new white sorghum variety (KM 32 -1) for food and high malting quality. * Lot 5: 5 new cowpea varieties resistant to parasitic weeds- Tumaini, Tamu, Soko, Faulu and Kat-Kunde. * Lot 6: Integrated Pest Management (IPM) technologies for control of fruit fly and seed weevil in mangoes.

* Lot 7: Integrated Management technologies for control of pests and disease losses in Avocados. * Lot 8: Improved Cashewnut production and management technologies. * Lot 9: Improved fish rearing technologies.

* Lot 10: Improved small ruminant technologies to improve productivity in arid and semi-arid Kenya. * Lot 11: 4 Grass ecotypes for pasture production, range reseeding and rehabilitation of degraded rangeland. * Lot 12: Improved camel management and production technologies.

* Lot 13: Kalro improved indigenous chicken. 1. This first call will allocate up to approximately EUR 1, 500,000.

Although the lead applicant may submit several applications (for different lots), only one application per lot is permitted. 2. Any support requested must fall between Euro 30,000 and Euro 60,000.

Additionally, any grant requested must fall between a minimum of 50 % and maximum of 90% of the total eligible costs of the action. 3. The grant may cover the entire eligible costs of the action if this is deemed essential to carry it out.

If this is the case, the lead applicant must justify the need for full financing. 4. The duration of financial support will be for a minimum of 24 months and a maximum of 36 months from the date of the contract.

Eligible actions to be supported: 1. Actions that promote adoption of technologies to improve productivity in identified value chains; 2. Actions that promote agribusinesses along the identified value chains; 3.

Actions that promote value addition, food and nutritional security in identified value chains; 4. Actions that lead to job creation and increased incomes in identified value chains.

* In order to be eligible for a grant, the lead applicant must: * be a legal person or an entity without legal personality or a natural person; * be a specific type of organisation such as: non-governmental organisation (NGO), Faith Based Organization (FBO) public sector operator such as a cooperative society or farmer association, Common Interest group (CIG), Community based Organization ( CBO) or international (inter-governmental) organisation; * be duly incorporated in Kenya and operating under the applicable Kenya law; * Actions may be implemented by one organization or multiple organisations in partnership.
