Invitation to the AI for Good Global Summit 2026 AI for Good Impact Award trophy Director, African Institute of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, Full Professor of Computer Science Appointed to the Independent International Scientific Panel on AI Prof Vukosi Marivate is a Professor of Computer Science and holds the ABSA UP Chair of Data Science at the University of Pretoria.
He specialises in developing Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) methods to extract insights from data, with a particular focus on the intersection of ML/AI and Natural Language Processing (NLP). His research is dedicated to improving the methods, tools and availability of data for local or low-resource languages.
As the leader of the Data Science for Social Impact research group in the Computer Science department, Vukosi is interested in using data science to solve social challenges. He has worked on projects related to science, energy, public safety, and utilities, among others. Prof Marivate is a co-founder of Lelapa AI, an African startup focused on AI for Africans by Africans.
Vukosi is a co-founder of the Masakhane Research Foundation, which aims to develop NLP technologies for African languages. Vukosi is also a co-founder of the Deep Learning Indaba, the leading grassroots Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence conference on the African continent that aims to empower and support African researchers and practitioners in the field.
Professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence, Department of Computing Science I am Professor of Responsible Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computing Science at Umeå University, Sweden, where I lead the AI Policy Lab . I am Wallenberg Scholar (2024) and Senior Advisor on AI Policy to the Wallenberg Foundations.
I am a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences (IVA), and Fellow of the European Artificial Intelligence Association (EURAI) and of ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems). I am also Guest Professor at the Civic AI Lab, University of Amsterdam, and Honorary Professoral Fellow at the University of Melbourne.
Given the increasing importance of understanding the societal, ethical, and legal impact of AI, I am deeply involved in international AI governance, policy, and strategy initiatives. I am currently co-chair of the ACM Tech Policy Council, member of UNESCO’s High-Level Expert Group on the Implementation of the UNESCO AI Ethics Recommendation, and member of the OECD Expert Group on AI Futures.

As part of UNESCO’s AI Ethics Experts Without Borders, I advise governments worldwide on the development and operationalization of national AI strategies. My research focuses on the interconnections between people, organizations, technology, and policy, with a strong emphasis on responsible and governance-aware AI systems.
My work spans from formal and computational models of agency, norms, and institutions to applied AI policy, evaluation frameworks, and socio-technical system design, combining theory, engineering, and methodological design. I have held major leadership roles in the AI research community, including Program Chair of AAMAS 2024 and Ethics Chair of AAAI 2024, and I currently serve on multiple international advisory boards and expert panels.

Connecting human rights and AI to empower people to take action and eliminate global injustices Deputy Director of TSB | Chief, Study Groups & Policy Department (SPD) , International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Dr Bilel Jamoussi, a distinguished engineer and diplomat, is the Deputy Director of ITU Telecommunication Standardization Bureau and Chief, Study Groups & Policy Department (SPD) in Geneva, Switzerland.
His primary mission is to establish the international standards essential for ensuring global telecommunications and ICT interoperability, promote universal, meaningful connectivity and champion sustainable digital transformation.
Key achievements under his tenure have been important new standards, ensuring increased industry engagement, bolstering cooperation with other standardization bodies, as well as leading in emerging tech discussions and building strategic partnerships. Before 2010, he held executive roles, including Director of Standards for Nortel, and contributed to over 90 international standards bodies.
With a PhD in Computer Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, he is an IEEE Senior Member and has served on the IEEESA Board of Governors. A key voice in the global ICT arena, he is a regular keynote speaker at events like the Global Cybersecurity Forum and is frequently interviewed by top media outlets.
Fluent in Arabic, French, and English, with knowledge in Spanish and German, Bilel’s global perspective has been shaped by living and working in Tunisia, Canada, the USA, and Switzerland.
Director of Institute for AI International Governance, Director of China Institute for Science and Technology Policy, and Co-Director of Global Institute for SDGs Dr. Lan Xue is a Distinguished Professor and Dean at Schwarzman College Tsinghua University. His teaching and research interests include global governance, crisis management, and science, technology and innovation policy.
From 2000 to 2018, he served as Associate Dean, Executive Associate Dean and Dean of the School of Public Policy and Management at Tsinghua University. He also holds adjunct positions at Carnegie Mellon University and the Brookings Institution.
Dr. Xue advises the State Council, chairs China’s National Expert Committee on Next Generation AI governance, and is a member of the Standing Committee of the Chinese Association of Science and Technology. Corporate Vice President & Chief Data Scientist, AI for Good Lab Juan M, Lavista Ferres is currently the Chief Scientist and Lab Director of the Microsoft AI For Good Research Lab, where he works with a team of data scientists and researchers in AI, Machine Learning and statistical modeling, working across Microsoft AI For Good efforts.
These efforts includes projects in AI For Earth, AI for Humanitarian Action, AI For Accessibility and AI For Health. Juan joined Microsoft in 2009 to work for the Microsoft Experimentation Platform (EXP) where he designed and ran randomized control experiments across different Microsoft groups.
Juan also worked as part of the Bing Data Mining team, where he led a group applying data mining, machine learning, statistical modeling and online experimentation at a large scale as well as providing data services for Bing. , Technology Innovation Institute (TII) Dr. Najwa Aaraj is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at Technology Innovation Institute (TII), the applied research pillar of the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), the overarching advanced technology body in Abu Dhabi responsible for driving research and development for transformative technology outcomes.
Previously to her role as CEO, Dr. Aaraj was the Chief Researcher at the Cryptography Research Center (CRC) and the Autonomous Robotics Research Center (ARRC) TII. Dr. Aaraj earned a PhD with Highest Distinction in Applied Cryptography and Embedded Systems Security from Princeton University (USA).
She has extensive expertise in applied cryptography, trusted platforms, security architecture for embedded systems, software exploit detection and prevention systems, and biometrics. She also specializes in shaping the robotics and self-organized autonomous vehicles ecosystem in the UAE and beyond – exploring their application across air, land, on-sea and underwater.

The Awards are open to individuals, SMEs, large corporations, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, and government bodies from around the world. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Startups and early-stage companies are not eligible for the AI for Good Impact Awards.
We invite them instead to apply for the AI for Good Innovation Factory startup competition. Can we apply if our project is still in the design phase or only an MVP? Yes.
While it’s beneficial to have a fully working solution, early-stage projects such as MVPs (Minimum Viable Products) are welcome to apply, provided you can clearly articulate the potential impact (backed by initial results) the innovation behind your solution, and a clear pathway for scaling. Can one organization submit multiple projects?
One organization can submit more than one application, providing they submit different projects to different categories. I developed this project with partners or collaborators. Who should submit the application?
Collaborative projects are welcome. The primary applicant should be the organization or individual representing the project throughout the Awards process. You can and should credit all relevant collaborators in your application.
They will all be equally recognized as finalists or winners should your project be selected. Only the entity applying will be eligible to receive the physical trophy at the Award ceremony. What needs to be included in the application?
Your application should include a detailed description of your project, measured impact of your solution, supporting documentation, and any optional multimedia materials (e.g., pitch decks, demo videos). All applications must be submitted in English. What are the Award categories?
There are three Award categories: AI for People, AI for Planet, and AI for Prosperity, each focusing on the ethical and impactful use of AI for societal benefit. How many winners will be selected? Is there one per category?
Yes, typically, there will be one winner per category . The exact number may vary at the discretion of the organizers. How are submissions judged?
Projects are evaluated by a panel of experts on innovation, impact, scalability, sustainability, relevance to global challenges, and ethical considerations. A weighted scoring rubric is used to ensure fairness. Do I need to attend the event in person to receive an award?
Finalists are highly encouraged to attend the AI for Good Global Summit, but presence at the event is not mandatory to receive an award. What qualifies a project for the Awards?
