AI For The Commonwealth – CENTER FOR DATA SCIENCE AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE Healey-Driscoll Administration Launches New Partnership with UMass Amherst to Recruit Students to Work with State Agencies on AI Projects for Social Good The new, on-campus internship program will be guided by the UMass Amherst Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence and the Public Interest Technology Initiative.
AI for the Commonwealth is a student internship program managed by the Center for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence in the Manning College of Information and Computer Science (CICS) in partnership with the Public Interest Technology Initiative (PIT@UMass) .
During this 16-week paid internship, we bring together talented UMass CICS undergraduate students, state institutions, and UMass mentors to apply cutting edge generative AI to solve real-world challenges for Massachusetts institutions and communities. This program is in partnership with the Massachusetts Executive Office of Technology Services and Security (EOTSS) .
Potential projects would benefit from generative AI to streamline operations and improve the delivery of services and programs for Massachusetts institutions and residents, including customer support, permit and license inquiries, regulatory document consulting, RFI responses summarizing, and more.
Open to both rising junior and senior undergraduate students in UMass Amherst CICS , applicants are evaluated based on alignment with state institution interests and projects, academic performance, teamwork, leadership, communication, and other professional skills.
Mentored by full-time faculty and staff, selected students are responsible for collaborating with stakeholders to define and implement AI solutions tailored to their problems, such as coding, testing and debugging programs for data engineering, data analytics, and machine learning.
