University Lending Group, in collaboration with University Bank , has introduced a down payment assistance grant program aimed at making homeownership more accessible for low to moderate income borrowers in Washtenaw County, MI. The Neighborly Housing Grant has been renamed the Al Wheeler Neighborly Housing Grant in honor of Dr. Albert H.
“Al” Wheeler, Ann Arbor’s first Black Mayor, civil rights leader, educator, and champion for fair housing. Alongside his wife, Emma Wheeler, he dedicated his life to expanding opportunities for families and strengthening communities throughout Washtenaw County. This initiative is designed to support individuals and families who might otherwise struggle to afford a down payment, thereby bridging the gap to homeownership.
Dr. Wheeler believed that access to safe, affordable housing creates stronger neighborhoods and lasting opportunity. This grant carries forward his legacy by helping individuals and families overcome barriers to homeownership while investing in the future of our community. Through the Al Wheeler Neighborly Housing Grant, we honor a local leader whose vision, service, and commitment to housing equality continue to inspire generations.
