CSE Assistant Professor Yu Su Honored with the 2025 Sloan Research Fellowship | Computer Science and Engineering CSE Assistant Professor Yu Su Honored with the 2025 Sloan Research Fellowship Posted: February 20, 2025 Yu Su , assistant professor of computer science and engineering, has been named a recipient of the 2025 Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship .

The annual honor is awarded to early-career scientists from across the U.S. and Canada whose achievements place them among the most promising researchers in their fields. The two-year, $75,000 fellowship is granted by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation to scientists in eight fields: chemistry, computer science, economics, mathematics, computational and evolutionary molecular biology, neuroscience, ocean sciences and physics.

Candidates are nominated by senior researchers in their field, and winning fellows are selected by independent panels of senior scholars. Jinghua Li , assistant professor of materials science and engineering, was another engineering faculty member to receive the award this year. Li and Su are among 124 other Sloan Fellows in 2025.

They also join 60 past faculty from The Ohio State University to receive the prestigious fellowship since 1955, when the fellowships were first awarded. Su has broad interests in developing artificial intelligence, with a focus on large language models (LLMs) and AI agents.

His work both furthers our fundamental understanding of LLMs and develops practical AI agent systems that can use computers as humans do, an emerging class of automation tools that holds tremendous potential. Li’s research focuses on fundamental understandings on synthesis chemistry and interfacial properties of thin-film materials as bio-interfaces.

Her work also focuses on application of these materials for next generation wearable and implantable biomedical devices to bridge the gap between rigid machine and soft biology. Sloan Foundation. “These extraordinary scholars are already making significant contributions, and we are confident they will shape the future of their fields in remarkable ways. ” Su joined Ohio State in 2020.

Previously, he was a senior researcher at Microsoft Semantic Machines working on conversational AI. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Tsinghua University, China, and his PhD from University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB), both in computer science.

His previous awards include Best or Outstanding Paper Awards from premier AI venues such as the IEEE/CVF Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) and Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), as well as the Outstanding Dissertation Award from UCSB. Li joined Ohio State in 2019.

Prior to that, she worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. She earned her bachelor’s in biological science from Shandong University in China and her PhD in chemistry from Duke University. Her previous awards include The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) Young Faculty Award and National Institutes of Health (NIH) Trailblazer Award in 2024.

She was also named Ohio State’s Early Career Innovator of the Year in 2023. Original story published in the College of Engineering News .
