3 million in its second cycle of Implementation and Outcomes Research grants. This funding opportunity seeks to support innovative and meritorious cancer researchers, at all levels, and teams seeking to translate promising research and scientific discoveries into effective interventions, tools, devices, technologies, or therapeutics related to cancer.
The CARE Board congratulates the awarded grantees in this category, to support implementation, translational, and outcomes research that advance the application of scientific discoveries and technologies or informs how the application of scientific discoveries impact patients and populations.
The following three grantees are awarded up to $3,299,949 as follows: Aptevo Therapeutics Inc. (Principal Investigator: Michelle Nelson, PhD) IND-Enabling Studies for APVO451, a Novel Trispecific Antibody for Solid Tumor Immunotherapy Maximum Award Amount: $1,499,951 Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (Principal Investigators: David MacPherson, PhD; Gavin Ha, PhD) Implementing a Novel Liquid Biopsy Assay to Phenotype Small Cell Lung Cancer for Clinical Applications Maximum Award Amount: $1,499,998 Seattle Children’s Research Institute (Principal Investigator: Kaitlyn Fladeboe, PhD) Alleviating Loneliness in Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Survivors Maximum Award Amount: $300,000 CARE Board Opens Search for Next Executive Director The CARE Board opens the search for the next Executive Director.

Governor Ferguson Preserves Cancer Research in Washington The Andy Hill Cancer Research Endowment (CARE) Fund Board of Directors is pleased to announce that Governor Ferguson has, by veto of a 2026 supplemental operating budget provision, restored CARE Fund’s access to available cancer research funding.
This decisive action safeguards cancer research programs in Washington and ensures that vital progress in prevention, treatment, and cures will continue. For the past decade, CARE Fund has been a vital source of investment in cancer research across Washington, supporting innovative projects, improving patient outcomes, and strengthening the state’s life sciences sector critical to Washington’s economic growth.
Over its ten-year history, the CARE Fund has invested approximately $80 million in the Washington state economy and leveraged matching funds from private and other non-state sources. An independent economic impact analysis found that every $1 in CARE Fund grants generates $1. 95 for Washington’s economy.
This strong return on investment demonstrates CARE Fund’s important role in fueling economic growth alongside pursuit of key scientific advancements in cancer research. CARE Fund investments support a vibrant workforce in cancer research and related industries, strengthening the state’s position as a national leader in life sciences and health innovation.
