ARPA-E SCALEUP is a grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy that funds early commercialization of breakthrough energy technologies that have advanced beyond the ARPA-E project stage but face elevated risk before reaching the market. Awards range from $1,000,000 to $10,000,000 to help technologies open factories, raise follow-on funding, and secure commercial partnerships.
Since 2019, SCALEUP projects have opened factories, raised hundreds of millions in follow-on investment, and secured deals with industry-leading companies. The program accepts applications on a rolling basis through SCALEUP Ready. Eligible applicants must have a prior ARPA-E-funded technology with clear market pathway.
ARPA-E encourages strong industry and investor partnerships as part of the application process.

The Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) has a 15-year history of supporting transformative technologies across a full spectrum of energy applications. Yet technologies that achieve substantial advancement may still face elevated risk of being stranded before they reach the market.
ARPA-E’s early commercialization program, Seeding Critical Advances for Leading Energy technologies with Untapped Potential (SCALEUP) addresses this scaling gap. Since 2019, SCALEUP projects have opened factories, raised hundreds of millions in follow-on funding, and secured deals with industry-leading companies. Each SCALEUP project started as an ARPA-E-funded technology with incredible promise.
