Credit: NASA North Carolina Space Grant was recently awarded an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Workforce Development grant through the NASA Space Grant College and Fellowship Project .
NC Space Grant’s award was one of 13 proposals selected from 40 applications nationwide. NC Space Grant, hosted at NC State, serves the public and private colleges, universities, and community colleges in North Carolina by expanding opportunities to understand and participate in NASA’s programming.
NC Space Grant has a proven history of connecting university research with industry needs, especially by supporting students as they prepare to enter careers in Science Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). Through this long-term workforce readiness programming, NC Space Grant has also made strong partnerships with government agencies, industry leaders, and education partners across North Carolina, the Southeast region, and nation.
This three-year project will focus on technical workforce readiness through partner collaborations that seek to understand and improve state capacity in alignment with NASA and industry needs. Specifically, the grant focuses on AI readiness in North Carolina’s workforce.
As an emergent and complex tool, it is important that North Carolina educators, industry leaders, and university partners prepare students to critically assess and use artificial intelligence — from machine learning to generative AI. Through this grant, NC Space Grant will fund new research to understand the implications of AI, convene thought leaders to assess needs and implementation, and help prepare North Carolina students.
NC Space Grant looks forwarding to partnering with many North Carolina universities and community colleges, the NC State Economic Development Partnership , the North Carolina Association of Workforce Development Boards , NCWorks Commission , and Workforce Solutions in the NC Department of Commerce among many partners active in workforce and economic development across North Carolina.
