According to the announcement, IPTO’s current research priorities are organized around three primary thrust areas: artificial intelligence innovation and execution, inherent security and privacy, and resilient megasystems.
Areas of interest include more efficient and trustworthy AI systems, inherently secure computing and networking environments, advanced cybersecurity capabilities, and technologies that improve understanding and management of highly complex interconnected systems such as supply chains, power grids, and other critical infrastructure.
DARPA emphasizes that it is seeking unconventional approaches that challenge accepted assumptions and have the potential to fundamentally alter existing practices. The office specifically notes that evolutionary improvements to current technologies are not the focus of this effort.
Instead, proposed research should pursue transformational advances in information science, computing, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, software assurance, and related disciplines. A notable aspect of the BAA is its flexibility. DARPA anticipates making multiple awards using a variety of funding instruments, including procurement contracts, grants, cooperative agreements, and Other Transaction agreements.
The agency is also encouraging shorter, agile research efforts and novel approaches that can rapidly demonstrate breakthrough capabilities. The announcement additionally highlights DARPA’s continued emphasis on resilient software development and formal methods.
The agency notes growing interest in mathematically rigorous approaches that can improve software security, reliability, and resilience while reducing exploitable vulnerabilities in critical systems.
For research institutions, advanced technology firms, startups, universities, AI companies, cybersecurity innovators, and other organizations pursuing high-risk, high-reward technologies, the IPTO Office-Wide BAA provides a standing opportunity to engage directly with one of the federal government’s leading advanced research organizations.
