The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey (The Foundation) has opened an RFP under its Creating Pillar to promote the powerful role the arts can play in improving health. The arts is an effective tool for conveying health messaging and encouraging healthy behaviors within a community. Our goal is to support new and innovative arts programs to help empower our members and the communities we serve to achieve their best health.
The Foundation supports programs that provide opportunities to engage the communities we serve in prevention, education, and awareness. Through a competitive application process, we invite arts organizations to submit a grant application that will advance the following areas of focus: 1. Encouraging healthy behaviors (physical, oral and mental).
2. Promoting health literacy by equipping residents with the knowledge and tools to understand, navigate and act on health information. * 3.
Connecting communities to available health services and resources. 4. Delivering clear, relevant, and memorable health information – e.g., encouraging healthy behavior through creative expression.
**Example:** A community theater program that addresses suicide prevention and anxiety among youth. **Example:** An arts-making partnership with a community health office to raise awareness of programming on diabetes and nutrition. The intersection of arts and community health is a rapidly developing field and we are eager to consider innovative, thoughtful and strategic proposals in this area.
* Special consideration will be given to projects that address health literacy gaps in underserved communities and provide tools to navigate barriers related to language, health systems and coverage.
## Health Literacy Gaps for Underserved Communities: * Understanding preventative care and when to seek it * Language barriers and unreliable translation support * Navigating the health care system * Limited understanding of health insurance * Chronic disease self-management ## Criteria for qualified applicants: * Arts organizations that promote or leverage fine, visual, performing, and/or literary arts through programming that engages individuals, audience members or the community-at-large.
* Arts organizations with previous health-focused programming experience are welcome but not required. * Arts organizations may partner with a health or other organization to design and/or deliver programming; applicants must describe in detail the collaborative partnership in their proposal. ## The Horizon Foundation for New Jersey will not fund: * Arts programs that address general wellness.
* Arts programs that provide therapeutic services. * Proposals received from a non-Arts organization. * Proposals that fall outside of our New Jersey service area.
* Multi-year grant requests. * Organizations without a financial audit. ## About the application process: * Applicants must submit proposals using the RFP Application.
* Applicants must be an Arts organization. * Grant range is up to $25,000 for a one-year program. * Arts & Community Health RFP available on **June 1, 2026**.
* **Proposals due on September 15, 2026**. * **Applicants will be informed of grants decisions by December 2026. ** * Approved grant programs will begin **January 1, 2027**.
