The Foundation does not make grants to individuals nor to U. S-based organizations but provides grants to selected Asian non profit organisations.
The foundation is operational in Asia and Pacific Islands. Their yearly grant budget exceeds $100,000,000. Grants range from $20,000 up to a few million USD.
Before any request is made for a grant, the Foundation encourages prospective grantees to follow a three phase process: Applicants are encouraged to review the Asia Foundation’s program areas. Then applicants are to submit to the appropriate office a brief Letter of Inquiry to determine whether the Foundation’s present interests and funds permit consideration of the request.
The letter of inquiry should include: a very brief introduction about the grant-seeking organization, a brief project description, and budget estimate. This can be done all year round. After receiving the letter, Foundation staff may reply informing the grant seeker as to whether or not the project fits within the The Asia Foundation’s interests.

The Asia Foundation's scholarship programs provide holistic, tailored support to girls and young women in secondary school and university in Asia, including material support for educational costs and essential support outside the classroom such as one-on-one mentoring, peer networking, counseling, and academic monitoring. The STEM scholarship program, launched in 2011, provides young women from disadvantaged backgrounds in Vietnam with the tools and support to succeed.
